shlokas. However, the manuscripts that have survived into the modern era have preserved
about eight thousand verses. These are divided into two parts, a Purva Khanda (early section)
and an Uttara Khanda (later section). The Purva Khanda contains about 229 chapters, but in

In Hindu mythology, X is a mythological being referred to as the female dog of the gods, or
Deva-shuni. She first appears in one of Hinduism's earliest texts, the Rig Veda, in which she
helps the god-king Indra to recover divine cows stolen by the Panis, a class of demons. This
legend is alluded to in many later texts, and X is often associated with Indra. The epic
Mahabharata, and some Puranas, also make brief reference to X.
Early Rig-Vedic works do not depict X as canine, but later Vedic mythologies and interpretations
usually do. She is described as the mother of all dogs. One scripture further describes X as the
mother of all wild animals.
In the Ramayana, X is the wife of Vibhishana. Sometimes, she is described a rakshasi, at other

They were carnivorous as if their only profession was to eat human beings. They used to kill
them, cook them and eat. But how could they get human beings every day? So these demon
brothers hatched out a plan. They pretended to be very humble devotees of Brahmins, and
every day they invited a Brahmin for lunch. The younger brother was a past master in black
magic. He would allow himself to be cut into pieces and cooked. He had the power to regain his
life afterwards. The elder brother would cut and cook his younger brother and feed the invited
Brahmin, who would not know what he had eaten. After the eating was over, the elder brother
would call out his younger brother saying, "O X, please come." X was the younger brother's
name. That man, through the power of his black magic, would regain life, burst the stomach of
the Brahmin and come out. And the poor Brahmin would then be the meal for both. Every day
this used to happen.

There was a very powerful sage by name Agastya Rishi.
He was a Brahmin. He was invited for lunch. He was not an ordinary Brahmin as the two
brothers took him to be. As usual, the younger brother was cooked and given to Agastya for his
lunch. Agastya could know this and thought that: "These demons want to kill me and eat me! I
will teach them a lesson today." He ate the meal. As soon as he finished his meal, the elder
brother said, "O X, please come." Agastya, the sage, rubbed his belly, muttering, “X jirno bhava":
Let X be digested. Turning to the elder brother, the sage said, "Sir, your brother has been
digested; he cannot come out and he will not come out." Oh! The elder brother was shocked.
He thought there was some special power with this Brahmin and he ran for his life. But Agastya
would not let him escape. He simply uttered 'Hum' -which reduced that elder brother to ashes.

Atapi Vatapi
X ('black mass' or 'time puzzle‘) is the name of a poison created from the sea when Devas and
Asuras churned it (Samudra manthan) in order to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality.
Fourteen different rathnas were recovered in this exercise, mostly retained by the Gods after
the Demons tried to cheat them. But before Amrita could be recovered, X was produced, which
started killing both sides. As no one could bear the poisonous fumes emitted by the poison,
both Devas and Asuras began to collapse. They ran for help to Brahma, who directed them to
Vishnu who advised them only Shiva could help them. So both parties went to Kailasha and
prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Shiva chose to consume the poison and thus drank it. His wife
Parvati, alarmed, stopped it in his throat with her hands, thus earning him the name
Viṣakaṇṭha. He was later saved by the Tara, a form of the goddess Parvati. The poison made his
throat turn blue; hence, he is also known as Nīlakaṇṭha.

X (literally "circle") is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the
universe. In common use, X has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric
pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
The basic form of most Xs is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each
gate is in the general shape of a T. Xs often exhibit radial balance.
The term appears in the Rigveda as the name of the sections of the work, and Vedic rituals use
Xs such as the Navagraha X to this day. Xs are also used in Buddhism.
In various spiritual traditions, Xs may be employed for focusing attention of practitioners and
adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a pious space and as an aid to meditation
and trance induction.

  • 69. They were carnivorous as if their only profession was to eat human beings. They used to kill them, cook them and eat. But how could they get human beings every day? So these demon brothers hatched out a plan. They pretended to be very humble devotees of Brahmins, and every day they invited a Brahmin for lunch. The younger brother was a past master in black magic. He would allow himself to be cut into pieces and cooked. He had the power to regain his life afterwards. The elder brother would cut and cook his younger brother and feed the invited Brahmin, who would not know what he had eaten. After the eating was over, the elder brother would call out his younger brother saying, "O X, please come." X was the younger brother's name. That man, through the power of his black magic, would regain life, burst the stomach of the Brahmin and come out. And the poor Brahmin would then be the meal for both. He ate the meal. As soon as he finished his meal, the elder brother said, "O X, please come." Agastya, the sage, rubbed his belly, muttering, “X jirno bhava": Let X be digested. Turning to the elder brother, the sage said, "Sir, your brother has been digested; he cannot come out and he will not come out." Oh! The elder brother was shocked. • 73. X ('black mass' or 'time puzzle‘) is the name of a poison created from the sea when Devas and Asuras churned it (Samudra manthan) in order to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Fourteen different rathnas were recovered in this exercise, mostly retained by the Gods after the Demons tried to cheat them. But before Amrita could be recovered, X was produced, which started killing both sides. As no one could bear the poisonous fumes emitted by the poison, both Devas and Asuras began to collapse. They ran for help to Brahma, who directed them to Vishnu who advised them only Shiva could help them. So both parties went to Kailasha and prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Shiva chose to consume the poison and thus drank it. His wife Parvati, alarmed, stopped it in his throat with her hands, thus earning him the name Viṣakaṇṭha. He was later saved by the Tara, a form of the goddess Parvati. The poison made his throat turn blue; hence, he is also known as Nīlakaṇṭha. What is X ? 7.  Theme connection - +30/-15
