A pure substance contains only one element or compound and has definite chemical and physical properties, while a mixture contains two or more substances and its properties may vary depending on concentrations. An element cannot be broken down chemically, elements are the basic building blocks of matter, and compounds are made of two or more chemically combined elements. Mixtures can be either homogeneous solutions that are uniform in composition, or heterogeneous mixtures where substances can later be separated as the mixture is not uniform.
