• Think of SketchUp not as CAD or BIM.
It’s really ‘design and communication’ software
"
• Why communicate? If you need to share with clients,
partners or subcontractors, SketchUp Pro and
LayOut can make your day!
"
• Let’s see how Nick Sonder Architect, a one-man firm,
uses one 3D model as the basis for presenting, as
well as creating a precise set of construction

4. Thoughts on Design Drawings
from Nick Sonder, Architect
“When you first open SketchUp LayOut,
you feel totally lost because it is not AutoCAD”
"
“Everything works differently”
"
“Once you get rid of the thought that it works like
AutoCAD, you realize, thank God it doesn’t work
like that...It works like SketchUp should”

6. ‘Fog’ in SketchUp = ‘Sfumato’ in Painting
Elevation view, absent of notes and dimensions. The ‘Fog’ setting, is used to create a painterly effect
known as ‘Sfumato.” Colors fade over distance, due to moisture in the air. Fog creates this dramatic effect.

8. Bird’s Eye View Animation
Animations can easily be created in SketchUp. In this animation the roof is peeled away as the camera
moves closer to the house, revealing the layout and design of the interior spaces.

9. Interior Rendering of Kitchen
Quick low-resolution renderings can be made to study lighting options and camera angles.
A final high-resolution rendering can be made in an hour or less, depending on computer speed.

10. Interior Rendering of Great Room
Exterior renderings in full daylight are easiest. Interiors take more time to set up since the lighting
locations are added before rendering.

11. Interior Renderings
Reflections and shadows create dramatic effects and provide clues to a material’s finish.
Note the couch upholstery’s soft finish verses the high sheen of the polished floor material.

13. Thoughts on Construction Drawings
from Nick Sonder, Architect
“The SketchUp house model generates all the floor
plans, reflected ceiling plan, roof plan, everything in
the sections. I also generate every interior elevation”
"
“Detailing is something I really have a lot of fun
with in SketchUp”
"
“I usually have anywhere between 60 and 90 details”

17. Elevations
Elevations contain typical construction drawing information, yet can be illustrative as well. Notice how
Rick uses the ‘Fog’ setting in SketchUp to highlight portions of the home that are in the foreground.

19. Building Sections
Nick uses the ‘Fog’ setting in the building sections to highlight the walls. The interior elevations appear

20. Construction Details - Exterior
Construction details are one of the most impressive aspects of LayOut. Perspective views, material
colors and textures, and organized call-outs make the CDs easy to read.
