Message from the President and Vice-Chancellor
I am delighted to welcome you to UNSW Australia, an internationally renowned,
research and teaching intensive university located in Sydney, Australia.
UNSW’s origins in providing higher education date back as far as 1833. It was
formally awarded university status in 1949 and has now grown and expanded
through an array of academic achievements to a ranking in 2015 amongst the
top 100 universities worldwide, including a ranking of 46th in the 2015 QS World
University Rankings.
This success stems from our talented staff and students, innovative teaching
programs and our cutting edge research that is aimed at solving society’s biggest
issues.
We excel across the spectrum of disciplines from medicine, science and
engineering, through business, law and built environment to arts, social sciences
and design. The University is administratively sound, highly collegiate, well-funded
and in a position of both stability and strength.
Our ambition for the next decade is to establish UNSW as Australia’s global
university - among the top 50 in the world. We aspire to this in the belief that
a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact,
education and thought leadership, can make an enormous difference to the lives
of people in Australia and around the world.
The UNSW 2025 Strategy was endorsed by the University Council in October 2015.
2016 has seen us move forward with our innovative, ambitious and altruistic
agenda, reflecting a conviction across our university community that UNSW has
the potential to achieve great things during the next decade.
Achieving our goals will require academic excellence, an innovative spirit,
boundless energy and substantial resources.
We are seeking to add exceptionally talented individuals to our team as we
embark on the next phase in our development of UNSW Australia.

We have embarked upon our UNSW 2025 Strategy which aims to propel
UNSW into the world’s top 50 universities by 2025.
The UNSW 2025 Strategy was developed following a wide-ranging
consultation, involving thousands of our staff, students, alumni and external
partners and the development of Green and White Papers. From the
consultation process, three strategic priority areas were identified.
Firstly, a drive for academic excellence in research and education. Universities
are often classified as‘research intensive’or‘teaching intensive’. UNSW is proud
to be an exemplar of both. We are amongst a limited group of universities
worldwide capable of delivering research excellence alongside the highest
quality education on a large scale.
Secondly, a passion for social engagement, which improves lives through
advancing equality, diversity, open debate and economic progress.
Thirdly, a commitment to achieving global impact through sharing our
capability in research and education in the highest quality partnerships with
institutions in both developed and emerging societies. We regard the interplay
of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact as the hallmarks
of a great forward-looking 21st century university.
Our ambition for the next decade is nothing less than to establish UNSW
as Australia’s global university. We aspire to this in the belief that a great
university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education
and thought leadership, can make a difference to the lives of people in
Australia and around the world.

UNSW is creating a campus for the 21st century. The ambitious and transformational campus
development program is evolving and growing to connect multipurpose and sustainable
buildings with contemporary student accommodation and high quality public spaces.
Investment in the program is focussed on expanding and renewing the UNSW campuses
across medicine, bio sciences, material sciences and engineering, mechanical and
manufacturing engineering, electrical engineering and science and engineering.
In 2015, UNSW completed the construction of the Ainsworth building the cornerstone of
the new Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering precinct, a new Materials Science
and Engineering building, and the Shared Health Research and Education Campus in Port
Macquarie. These new buildings and precincts feature state-of-the-art teaching facilities,
laboratories, student research learning areas and staff and student amenities.
The campus renewal projects over the last two years include renewing and upgrading a range
of spaces on campus including laboratories, learning environments, studios, staff workplaces
and retail outlets.
Continuing to enhance the student and staff experience on campus to create a vibrant
community is being facilitated through student accommodation upgrades, increasing the
number and quality of retail and service outlets and improving sporting grounds. Work is
already underway to transform the Roundhouse into an exciting communal events space
for students, development of Alumni Park, an open green space reflecting the pride and
achievements of our alumni, and integrating the campus with the new Light Rail and opening
it up to the city of Sydney.
The UNSW 2025 vision of creating a seamless integration of our physical and digital campuses
to provide a world-class environment is well on the way to being achieved. The result will be
an outstanding set of connected places where students, staff, alumni, partners and the local
community can come together to innovate, transform, learn and contribute to society.

major research grants and fellowships that enable them to conduct ground-breaking research in areas such as technology and the law, international finance, human rights,
contracts, environmental protection or justice for Indigenous peoples.
Our contributions in these areas reflect our ethos and commitment to the notion that the law must serve the needs of the community. The work of our graduates and
academics alike has a major impact on local and global debates, whether it be through the media or work for law reform and parliamentary processes.
UNSW Law is also supported by 60 professional and technical staff who provide management and support in teaching, research, finance, marketing and communications,
student recruitment, student administration and alumni and development initiatives.
UNSW Law incorporates a range of legal research, advocacy and education centres within the Faculty. These centres are integral to the Faculty’s research output and play an

  • 3. 3 Message from the President and Vice-Chancellor I am delighted to welcome you to UNSW Australia, an internationally renowned, research and teaching intensive university located in Sydney, Australia. UNSW’s origins in providing higher education date back as far as 1833. It was formally awarded university status in 1949 and has now grown and expanded through an array of academic achievements to a ranking in 2015 amongst the top 100 universities worldwide, including a ranking of 46th in the 2015 QS World University Rankings. This success stems from our talented staff and students, innovative teaching programs and our cutting edge research that is aimed at solving society’s biggest issues. We excel across the spectrum of disciplines from medicine, science and engineering, through business, law and built environment to arts, social sciences and design. The University is administratively sound, highly collegiate, well-funded and in a position of both stability and strength. Our ambition for the next decade is to establish UNSW as Australia’s global university - among the top 50 in the world. We aspire to this in the belief that a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education and thought leadership, can make an enormous difference to the lives of people in Australia and around the world. The UNSW 2025 Strategy was endorsed by the University Council in October 2015. 2016 has seen us move forward with our innovative, ambitious and altruistic agenda, reflecting a conviction across our university community that UNSW has the potential to achieve great things during the next decade. Achieving our goals will require academic excellence, an innovative spirit, boundless energy and substantial resources. We are seeking to add exceptionally talented individuals to our team as we embark on the next phase in our development of UNSW Australia. Professor Ian Jacobs President and Vice-Chancellor UNSW Australia 3
  • 4. 4 We have embarked upon our UNSW 2025 Strategy which aims to propel UNSW into the world’s top 50 universities by 2025. The UNSW 2025 Strategy was developed following a wide-ranging consultation, involving thousands of our staff, students, alumni and external partners and the development of Green and White Papers. From the consultation process, three strategic priority areas were identified. Firstly, a drive for academic excellence in research and education. Universities are often classified as‘research intensive’or‘teaching intensive’. UNSW is proud to be an exemplar of both. We are amongst a limited group of universities worldwide capable of delivering research excellence alongside the highest quality education on a large scale. Secondly, a passion for social engagement, which improves lives through advancing equality, diversity, open debate and economic progress. Thirdly, a commitment to achieving global impact through sharing our capability in research and education in the highest quality partnerships with institutions in both developed and emerging societies. We regard the interplay of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact as the hallmarks of a great forward-looking 21st century university. Our ambition for the next decade is nothing less than to establish UNSW as Australia’s global university. We aspire to this in the belief that a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education and thought leadership, can make a difference to the lives of people in Australia and around the world. The strategy document can be found at www.2025.unsw.edu.au A New Strategy − Australia’s Global University 4
  • 5. 5 UNSW was established in 1949 to teach and conduct research in scientific, technological and professional disciplines. Today we have in excess of 50,000 students and have remained true to our focus on practical application and impact. Our goal is to achieve gender parity for women in senior leadership positions by 2025. It is why the University is actively working towards a SAGE Athena SWAN citation and why we are committed to making sustainable structural and cultural changes that advance gender equity in academic and professional roles. Striving for balance UNSW wants its employees to enjoy a rewarding career and a balanced lifestyle. We know a‘one size fits all’approach doesn’t work. That’s why we provide flexible work and leave arrangements which can be negotiated with your manager to help people deliver results in the most productive way possible. We offer generous paid parental leave, operate four early education (childcare) centres and are an accredited breastfeeding-friendly workplace with parents’rooms on campus. Photo Credit: Tamara Dean Accepted for who you are UNSW understands that everyone is different, and we value the perspectives and life experiences that all of our employees bring to the workplace. Our desire is for all employees to reach their full potential and to feel they can be themselves regardless of their gender, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity, cultural background and Indigenous origin. That’s why we have Diversity Champions, network and advisory groups and diversity training to create an environment where people can build the career they want.
