The campus of the Institute extends to an area of 320 acres. With
many topographical features, imaginatively laid out with
picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various nature and
stature, and clean and wide roads, the campus presents a
spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. The
campus area has been divided into four functional zones which
are as follows:
• Residential zone for students;
• Residential zone for the faculty and staff;
• Academic zone for academic buildings and workshops; and
• Cultural-cum-social and recreational zone for students.
The site being longitudinal in shape, the last two zones have been

CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI
Design composition of IIT Delhi
• Academic Area: It includes institutes’ Main
building (multi storey),Block1, Block2, Block3,
Block4, Block5, Block6,Block 7, Block 8, Central
library, Textile Technology, State bank of India,
Workshop ,Cafeteria building, Sports pavilion, IIT
hospital and Auditorium.
• Main Building is 8 storeys high and houses the
offices of all the deans and other administrative
offices and conference halls. The material used
for construction is Brick cladded with Dhaulpur
stone which is beige in color and requires less
maintenance. The main block is connected to the
academic block
• The academic blocks are linear blocks and are
connected by corridors and bridges to go through
every block and in-between two blocks a
courtyard is present and it is landscaped.
• All academic blocks are planned in a compact
manner. The blocks are divided into six parts
according the need of the space required for the
department placed. The library is located on the
alone block near the academic and administrative
block.
• The administrative building consists of the offices
of the director, other important offices like that of
the registrar and deputy registrar. It also includes
the security office as a separate entity in the
administrative building itself at its main entrance.
Academic core
Electrical Department (academic
block)
• The IIT Delhi Library System consists
of a Central Library and 18
departmental libraries which
collectively support the teaching,
research and extension programmes
of the Institute. All students, faculty
members and employees of the
Institute are entitled to use the
library facilities on taking library
membership. The Library, besides
having a huge collection of books on
engineering, science and humanities
offers library services through its
various Divisions. The library building
stands next to the academic and
administrative building.
• The textile technology department is
the oldest of all the departments
that are present in IIT Delhi. It stands
in front of the existing administrative
building and is a low rise structure
following plain brick architecture.
This is the only textile engineering
department in all the IITs that offers
its course from undergraduate till
doctoral level as well as research and
development.

Typical layout of the academic block
floor of the Library
CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI
• The main auditorium of the IIT campus lies in the
main building itself and is also called the Dogra
Hall. This has a unique structure as the whole
massive roof is supported by on only four
columns. The load of the massive structure is
handled by the shape of the built form itself as it
is a HYPERBOLOID structure. The shape of the
building gives strength to the structure itself. The
strength of the auditorium or the convocation
hall is around 1111 people. Another auditorium
of a capacity of 325 seating is also present in the
campus and another auditorium of a seating
capacity of 1000 people is proposed in the
campus.
• There is a Hospital which is provided with the
basic community health facilities and a provision
for minor surgeries.
Auditorium (Dogra hall)
• Housing: The housing is given for the faculty, the staff, the technical as well as
the non technical staff inside the campus. Housing for staff and non technical
staff is given separate. Workers housing are given in front of the campus and
staff and the faculty housing is given at back side of the campus.
• The Institute lays considerable emphasis on
student participation, in various outdoor and
indoor games. The students are encouraged to
participate in games and sports activities whic
cover athletics (men and women), badminton
(men and women), basketball (men and wome
cricket, football, gliding, gymnastics, hiking and
mountaineering, hockey, judo, kabaddi, squash
table tennis (men and women), tennis, volleyb
yoga, weightlifting, multi-gym, swimming and
water-polo. Well laid out fields are available on
the campus. A cricket field, a hockey and a
football ground, volleyball and basket-ball cou
(flood lit), six tennis courts (one of these flood
lit), tennis practice wall, table tennis tables (on
in each hostel), three squash courts, one
badminton hall, a swimming pool,
weightlifting/weight training apparatus, a
stadium with standard athletics track and
ancillary arrangements for athletics are the
facilities available to the students.
• Another building in the
academic area is the
Management building
where management
studies are imparted.
CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI
• The housing is characterized by the usage of brick
as the primary material and thus exposed brick
work is the prime architectural style of the
housing. The housing for the faculty on higher
posts is low rise (row housing) other being multi
storied.
• Students’ Activity Centre: The Students' Activity
Centre is the nerve centre of all student activities
on the campus. The Centre comprising a Club
Building, Gymnasium Hall, Swimming Pool,
Amphitheatre, Music Rooms, Hobbies Workshop
and a large Dark Room, caters to various hobbies
of the students. They have a place to paint, to
sculpt or to tinker with the radio. There are
committee rooms where they can hold formal or
informal meetings and a large marble-floored hall
for exhibitions. On the first floor of the Centre,
students have the facility to play billiards.
BOY’S HOSTEL
Academic core
Conceptual sketch of the Hostels GIRL’S HOSTEL
• Hostels: There are 9 boys’ hostels and 3 girls’
hostels in the campus. Some of the boys’ hostels
are Zanskar boys’ hostel, Kumaon boys’ hostel,
Vindhyachal boys’ hostel, Shiwalik boys’ hostel,
Karakoram hostel, Amavany boys’ hostel and
other three hostels. Out of these the Kumaon
hostel is for the research students.
• Each Hostel is self-contained with amenities such
as a reading room, an indoor games room, a
lounge and a dining hall with mess. All rooms are
provided with internet access as well.
• The boys’ hostels form one zone towards the left
of the academic zone and the main sports
facilities. The girls’ hostels are located in the
faculty residential area and towards the gate
number 4.
• All the hostels have used the exposed brick work
as the maintenance required is less for such
buildings. The hostels have a central courtyard
around which the planning is done. Community
facilities are provided near by the hostels as well
as sports facilities are in the vicinity.
Students’ Activity Centre (site plan of IIT) Open air Theatre (OAT)
• With a moat on one side and a high stone-wall on
the other, the Students' Activity Centre recalls to
the visitors memories of an ancient fort.
CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI
• Landscape: The campus is free from pollution and
is a different world as compared to the
surrounding area of the IIT Delhi. The campus is
lush green and has around 25,000 trees and other
plants. The trees grown here are mainly Mango,
Jamun, Neem, Tamarind, Golden shower,
Gulmohur, Neeli Gulmohur, Devils’ tree, etc.
Other than these many flowering plants as well as
the ground covers have been planted.
• The landscape has been planned keeping in mind
the central or the primary circulation path. The
trees have been planted along the road side
shading the pathways as well as the road. Dense
vegetation has been provided so as to cut off the
sun as well as the noise. This shields the building
blocks that have been planned near to the road.
• Similarly, the plantation along the secondary
circulation follows the same pattern.
• Other than this, all the department buildings as
well as other administrative buildings are
surrounded by the lush green vegetation.
• No part of the campus is devoid of lush green
attire of the plant material. The housing as well as
other hostels are also surrounded by thick
vegetation as well as beautifully and properly
maintained landscaped gardens.
BOY’S HOSTEL
• Other than these the roads’
intersections have been well
maintained and landscaped using
round-abouts. To hide a few buildings
like the Director’s residence, artificial
mound has been created. Even the
sports facilities like the ground,
pavilion etc. have been punctuated
with trees and proper plant materials.
Thus, the IIT Delhi Campus has lush
green landscape and properly
managed landscape plan which not
only protects from the sun but also
saves from the pollution and noise
pollution too making the campus all
together a different world from the
area outside the boundary of the
campus.
• Materials used: The material used
predominantly is brick work and
Dhaulpur stone (locally available
stone). The academic area has brick
work cladded with Dhaulpur stone for
no or less maintenance. The
departments are a mix of exposed
brickwork, cladding as well as a
proportionate use of concrete. The
material used in housing as well as
the hostel blocks is mainly brick with
a considerable and necessary amount
of concrete.
CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI
• The IIT Delhi campus has been planned in such a
way that the people dwelling in various parts of
the campus can have same distance to travel to
the central of the campus i.e. the academic core
of the institute.
• The academic and the institutional zone are
exactly at the centre of the campus.
• The boys’ hostels have been placed very close to
the academic zone but at the same time the girls’
hostel has been planned in the housing zone but
a little away from the academic zone.
• The community facilities have been placed in
every zone catering to the various zones.
• The students’ activity centre is placed near to the
academic zone on the primary circulation zone
and near to the boys’ hostel but very far away
from the girls’ hostel.
• The material used predominantly is brick work
and Dhaulpur stone (locally available stone). The
academic area has brick work cladded with
Dhaulpur stone for no or less maintenance. This
material is resistant to the harsh climate of Delhi.
• The circulation and the movement in the campus
are very well integrated with the building
scheme.
• The natural lighting is provided for the academic
from courtyards. The auditorium and swimming
pool have the defuse lighting. The library has the
serial of windows for lighting.
• The walking distance on the site is
quite large. Although the movement
around the academic area has been
restricted such that the user does not
have to travel a lot to reach any
department and other facilities.
• On the other hand, the walking
distance from the residential area and
the hostels to the academic zone is
large which has been counter
balanced by the institution by
providing the students with round the
clock bus service as well as cycles.

Main Building Main Building Typical layout of the academic block floor of the Library
  • 4. CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI • The main auditorium of the IIT campus lies in the main building itself and is also called the Dogra Hall. This has a unique structure as the whole massive roof is supported by on only four columns. The load of the massive structure is handled by the shape of the built form itself as it is a HYPERBOLOID structure. The shape of the building gives strength to the structure itself. The strength of the auditorium or the convocation hall is around 1111 people. Another auditorium of a capacity of 325 seating is also present in the campus and another auditorium of a seating capacity of 1000 people is proposed in the campus. • There is a Hospital which is provided with the basic community health facilities and a provision for minor surgeries. Auditorium (Dogra hall) • Housing: The housing is given for the faculty, the staff, the technical as well as the non technical staff inside the campus. Housing for staff and non technical staff is given separate. Workers housing are given in front of the campus and staff and the faculty housing is given at back side of the campus. • The Institute lays considerable emphasis on student participation, in various outdoor and indoor games. The students are encouraged to participate in games and sports activities whic cover athletics (men and women), badminton (men and women), basketball (men and wome cricket, football, gliding, gymnastics, hiking and mountaineering, hockey, judo, kabaddi, squash table tennis (men and women), tennis, volleyb yoga, weightlifting, multi-gym, swimming and water-polo. Well laid out fields are available on the campus. A cricket field, a hockey and a football ground, volleyball and basket-ball cou (flood lit), six tennis courts (one of these flood lit), tennis practice wall, table tennis tables (on in each hostel), three squash courts, one badminton hall, a swimming pool, weightlifting/weight training apparatus, a stadium with standard athletics track and ancillary arrangements for athletics are the facilities available to the students. • Another building in the academic area is the Management building where management studies are imparted.
  • 5. CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI • The housing is characterized by the usage of brick as the primary material and thus exposed brick work is the prime architectural style of the housing. The housing for the faculty on higher posts is low rise (row housing) other being multi storied. • Students’ Activity Centre: The Students' Activity Centre is the nerve centre of all student activities on the campus. The Centre comprising a Club Building, Gymnasium Hall, Swimming Pool, Amphitheatre, Music Rooms, Hobbies Workshop and a large Dark Room, caters to various hobbies of the students. They have a place to paint, to sculpt or to tinker with the radio. There are committee rooms where they can hold formal or informal meetings and a large marble-floored hall for exhibitions. On the first floor of the Centre, students have the facility to play billiards. BOY’S HOSTEL Academic core Conceptual sketch of the Hostels GIRL’S HOSTEL • Hostels: There are 9 boys’ hostels and 3 girls’ hostels in the campus. Some of the boys’ hostels are Zanskar boys’ hostel, Kumaon boys’ hostel, Vindhyachal boys’ hostel, Shiwalik boys’ hostel, Karakoram hostel, Amavany boys’ hostel and other three hostels. Out of these the Kumaon hostel is for the research students. • Each Hostel is self-contained with amenities such as a reading room, an indoor games room, a lounge and a dining hall with mess. All rooms are provided with internet access as well. • The boys’ hostels form one zone towards the left of the academic zone and the main sports facilities. The girls’ hostels are located in the faculty residential area and towards the gate number 4. • All the hostels have used the exposed brick work as the maintenance required is less for such buildings. The hostels have a central courtyard around which the planning is done. Community facilities are provided near by the hostels as well as sports facilities are in the vicinity. Students’ Activity Centre (site plan of IIT) Open air Theatre (OAT) • With a moat on one side and a high stone-wall on the other, the Students' Activity Centre recalls to the visitors memories of an ancient fort.
  • 6. CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI • Landscape: The campus is free from pollution and is a different world as compared to the surrounding area of the IIT Delhi. The campus is lush green and has around 25,000 trees and other plants. The trees grown here are mainly Mango, Jamun, Neem, Tamarind, Golden shower, Gulmohur, Neeli Gulmohur, Devils’ tree, etc. Other than these many flowering plants as well as the ground covers have been planted. • The landscape has been planned keeping in mind the central or the primary circulation path. The trees have been planted along the road side shading the pathways as well as the road. Dense vegetation has been provided so as to cut off the sun as well as the noise. This shields the building blocks that have been planned near to the road. • Similarly, the plantation along the secondary circulation follows the same pattern. • Other than this, all the department buildings as well as other administrative buildings are surrounded by the lush green vegetation. • No part of the campus is devoid of lush green attire of the plant material. The housing as well as other hostels are also surrounded by thick vegetation as well as beautifully and properly maintained landscaped gardens. BOY’S HOSTEL • Other than these the roads’ intersections have been well maintained and landscaped using round-abouts. To hide a few buildings like the Director’s residence, artificial mound has been created. Even the sports facilities like the ground, pavilion etc. have been punctuated with trees and proper plant materials. Thus, the IIT Delhi Campus has lush green landscape and properly managed landscape plan which not only protects from the sun but also saves from the pollution and noise pollution too making the campus all together a different world from the area outside the boundary of the campus. • Materials used: The material used predominantly is brick work and Dhaulpur stone (locally available stone). The academic area has brick work cladded with Dhaulpur stone for no or less maintenance. The departments are a mix of exposed brickwork, cladding as well as a proportionate use of concrete. The material used in housing as well as the hostel blocks is mainly brick with a considerable and necessary amount of concrete.
  • 7. CASE STUDY – IIT DELHI • The IIT Delhi campus has been planned in such a way that the people dwelling in various parts of the campus can have same distance to travel to the central of the campus i.e. the academic core of the institute. • The academic and the institutional zone are exactly at the centre of the campus. • The boys’ hostels have been placed very close to the academic zone but at the same time the girls’ hostel has been planned in the housing zone but a little away from the academic zone. • The community facilities have been placed in every zone catering to the various zones. • The students’ activity centre is placed near to the academic zone on the primary circulation zone and near to the boys’ hostel but very far away from the girls’ hostel. • The material used predominantly is brick work and Dhaulpur stone (locally available stone). The academic area has brick work cladded with Dhaulpur stone for no or less maintenance. This material is resistant to the harsh climate of Delhi. • The circulation and the movement in the campus are very well integrated with the building scheme. • The natural lighting is provided for the academic from courtyards. The auditorium and swimming pool have the defuse lighting. The library has the serial of windows for lighting. • The walking distance on the site is quite large. Although the movement around the academic area has been restricted such that the user does not have to travel a lot to reach any department and other facilities. • On the other hand, the walking distance from the residential area and the hostels to the academic zone is large which has been counter balanced by the institution by providing the students with round the clock bus service as well as cycles.
