DEVELOPMENT
 The gradual growth or formation of something –
intransitively as something that happens over time.
 Training is what other people do to you.
Development is what you do to yourself.
WHY DO WE NEED DEVELOPMENT ?
Development is required to progress in life
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPMENT ?
“IT IS A YOU DO TO YOURSELF” APPROACH
 A person is defined by who he is. A person’s career
defining thread is he himself and what he has done
 If an individual takes charge of his own
development, it is likely to reflect his needs and
interests
 The individual is likely to feel more ownership of the
process and follow through with it
FOUR AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT
 Awareness – You learn how to use your eyes and
ears better to find out what happens when you
teach
 Skills – You learn to do something
 Knowledge – You learn about something
 Attitude – You learn about your assumptions
An individual’s development is about how
you grow and change in all four areas
OBSTACLES OF DEVELOPMENT
 Attitudes – fear of change, tendency to blame
others, laziness
 Colleagues - entrenched cynicism can curb
enthusiasm and motivation
 Stress – Burnout is a syndrome of emotional
exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced
personal accomplishment
WAYS OF DEVELOPING
 Developing by doing – learn from experience
 Making things happen – make sure you are
organised and can prioritize. You need to address
time management, motivation, leadership and
personal development
 Making the most of the things that happens to
you – It is important to think about how to make the
most of the situations
