the job was tough ... it was confusing. You see, no one knew
what was being made in Oak Ridge, not even me, and a lot of
the people thought they were wasting their time here. It was
up to me to explain to the dissatisfied workers that they were
doing a very important job. When they asked me what, I'd
have to tell them it was a secret. But I almost went crazy
myself trying to figure out what was going on.”

23. X.com (originally known as X Y) is a question answering-focused e-
business and web search engine founded in 1996 by Garrett
Gruener and David Warthen in Berkeley, California.
X.com has been criticized for its browser toolbar, which has been
accused of behaving like malware due to its bundling with other software and
the difficulty of its uninstallation.
The original idea behind X Y was to allow users to get answers to
questions posed in everyday, natural language, as well as by traditional keyword
searching. The current X.com still supports this, with support for math,
dictionary, and conversion questions.
In 2005 the company announced plans to phase out Y and on
February 27, 2006, the character disappeared from X.com. He was stated to be
"going into retirement." However, the UK/Ireland edition of the website
prominently brought the character back in 2009.

30. In the year 2003 in India, several telecommunications companies were competing for a
share of the rapidly growing mobile phone market. X wanted to convey the message that
its service was robust enough to provide coverage in every part of its coverage areas.
Mahesh V. and Rajeev Rao, Senior Creative Directors at the agency, spent a whole night
developing the idea.
Their first idea was a little sister following her brother. "On second thoughts, we
concluded that a dog would be much less mushy", adds Mahesh. That's when they hit
upon the theme, "Wherever you go, our network follows", and the idea for the
campaign: a dog that follows a boy in the most unlikely places – school, bath, barber
shop, etc.

X was finally launched in 1990. However within weeks of its launch, X
was found to contain a catastrophic flaw, which was a challenge to fix due
to X’s location (it is now the only one of its kind to be serviced in its
location).
X and the organization heading the project became the butt of many
jokes, and the project was popularly regarded as a white elephant. For
instance, in the 1991 comedy The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, X was
pictured with Lusitania, the Hindenburg, and the Edsel.
Its scientific successor is scheduled for launch in 2019.

42. X is a run and gun indie video game developed and published by StudioMDHR.
As the title character X, along with his brother, Y, one or two players fight a
series of bosses in order to repay a debt to the devil.
The game was heavily inspired by the rubber hose style of animation used in
cartoons of the 1930s, such as the work of studios Fleischer and Walt Disney
Animation, seeking to emulate their subversive and surrealist qualities.
SKOAR!, an Indian magazine, website, and community dedicated to video
games called it, “The Dark Souls of 2D Platformers”.
X won the IGN Best Xbox One game at E3 award in 2015, and also won the
award for "Best Indie Game" at the Gamescom 2015 Awards. It was also

The piece is played as the title character Peer Gynt, in a dream-like
fantasy, enters "Dovregubbens hall". The scene's introduction
continues: “There is a great crowd of troll courtiers, gnomes and
goblins. Dovregubben sits on his throne, with crown and sceptre,
surrounded by his children and relatives. Peer Gynt stands before
him. There is a tremendous uproar in the hall." The lines sung are

of four chords with a simple, repeating bass, which provide the
groundwork for variations and improvisation. British

X was all too aware of the jokes made about all of her ex-boyfriends and
how she likes to include them in her songwriting. She told the director of the
music video of her song Y, that she wanted to address the general thought of
her in the clip in a fun way by playing a crazy villain.
The video was partly inspired by A Clockwork Orange. Kahn
explained, "There's a lot of symmetrical framing that's Kubrickian, which is a
really funny way to approach a pop video. But it's there if you look at the way
there's center-framing and symmetry throughout the whole thing,“
It is the thirteenth most viewed YouTube video of all time.
The music video also drew the ire of car enthusiasts, who were shocked that
she seemingly destroys a rare vintage vehicle in one scene.
But they can all pipe down, as it turns out the singer didn't really take
a golf club to a vintage Shelby AC Cobra. It was revealed it was staged, and
made to look real with the help of special effects.

Maria Hoornik, an alcoholic prostitute. She became his companion,
mistress and model.
Over the course of 10 years, X created more than 43 self-
portraits as both paintings and drawings. "I am looking for a deeper
likeness than that obtained by a photographer," he wrote to his sister.
"People say, and I am willing to believe it, that it is hard to know

painted by Y are more than a view of nature, they are more like a
revelation,” he later wrote to his brother.
