3. Introduction
“ As fog comes on a moonless night…..
When the wind blows in direction right ……
Jatinga turns into an island of search light….
And birds appear like ghosts from nowhere… “
Jatinga, famous for the phenomenon of birds
committing suicide”, is located on a spur of the
Haflong ridge, the head quarter of the Dima
Hasao district . It is centrally located at the
junction of the roads leading to Haflong,
Lumding and Silchar. In Jatinga, the mist & fog
lie like a veil around the beautiful face of the
damsel . From September to November , during
these late monsoon months, mysterious
behaviour of birds takes place .
4. Migratory Birds at Jatinga
Birds that have been sighted to
Jatinga over the years include
the Kingfisher , Indian pitta ,
green breasted pitta , green
pigeon ,black pigeon ,black
drongo ,racket tailed drongo
,whistling ducks ,spotted doves
,emerald, grey heron ,black
bittern ,little egret and pond
heron etc.,
5. Necessary condition for the
phenomenon
The followings are the ideal necessary condition of
birds “committing suicide ’’ –
• The air should be foggy, cloudy and misty .
• If there is slight rain ,it would be even better .
• The wind must be from South to North direction .
• It should be moonless dark nights . And
• Best time is in between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
6. Is it really suicide, or something
else ?
"It is not a suicide, to be precise. But the fact remains that birds are attracted
by light and fly towards any object with a light source. This phenomenon still
puzzles bird specialists," said Anwaruddin Choudhury, a well-known
ornithologist of Assam .
From the past and present observation and experiences of the bird
specialists many of them would like to recommend that the birds don’t commit
suicide .
The suicide however is just a part of the mystery the more baffling
questions is why birds fly after sunset at all , as research shows that most
birds are diurual i.e., active only during the day .
7. How the birds come into death ?
At the end of monsoon months especially
on moonless and foggy dark nights
between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., birds are
disturbed by the locals and they are
attracted to lights. These dazed birds are
captured using bamboo poles by the locals
. The local tribal's first took this natural
phenomenon to be spirits flying from the
sky to terrorize them. This phenomenon is
not confined to a single species,
with Black Bittern, Little Egret, Pond
Heron, Indian Pitta and Kingfishers all
being affected.
8. Remedy measures
•By launching a campaign against the killing of migratory
birds.
•By introducing some new Act
•By introducing placards with messages like ‘Welcome
winged guests of Jatinga,’ ‘Save birds, uphold the fame of
Jatinga,’ etc.
•By slogans like ‘Chiriyon ko bachana hai,’ ‘Birds are my
friends,’ etc.
•Producing films based on birds and wildlife conservation.
9. Conclusion
The “Jatinga ” is the asset of Indian
biodiversity. The species at the Jatinga is
now in the red zone. In future there will be
a huge possibility to transform this species
as endangered.
So we should take this responsibility to
conserve this species, to rescue this
precious asset of nature.
