When it comes to designing the next generation of home appliances, companies should be looking at technological possibilities as well as considering changes in everything from food science, demographic projections, healthcare, environmental concerns, the economy and commerce. Trends point toward a society of the future that is more urbanised, environmentally- friendly and connected. These have major implications for how people might live and interact with products, information and each other.
In this report, we highlight four emerging trends in home appliances: space efficient, environmentally friendly, connected home, and age-friendly.

Changing lifestyle trends and attitudes are impacting the size and
nature of households. Single-person households are increasing as
people delay marriage and starting families. Urbanization,
population growth and efficiency have caused small space living to
rise in popularity. Micro dwellings have the potential to make
urban dwelling more compatible with the way people live now and
help cities absorb more people. Additionally, tiny homes are often
more affordable and offer freedom from high energy bills. The
implications for goods and services are tangible and happening at
a rapid pace.

GE’s Micro Kitchen
The compact kitchen is designed for super tiny apartments.
The Micro Kitchen is a kitchen-in-a-box, comprised of a 24-inch-wide
countertop with an induction stove and a sink with a sliding cutting
board. Underneath the countertop sits a microwave, convection oven,
refrigerator and freezer, and dishwasher. Users can access each of the
appliances by pulling them out of their respective drawers.
The kitchen is modular. Depending on the space, a user could break apart
or combine stacks to place in odd corners or skinny spaces, as needed.

Ecooking, the Vertical Kitchen
The single module kitchen is a hub for sustainable cooking.
Italian design firm Massimo Facchineti created a vertical kitchen called
Ecooking. The 2' x 2' tower manages to fit a cooktop (four burners plus
air vent), refrigerator and freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker, and herb
garden. It also includes storage space and 15 square feet of countertops,
once unfolded. The electrical elements of the kitchen are powered by the
energy produced by solar panels and the water coming from the sink is
filtered and reused in the dishwasher before undergoing a second
filtering process to water the plants in the vertical greenhouse.

A-La-Carte System, the Mobile
Kitchen
The mobile kitchen with a permanent feel.
Stadtnomaden’s A-La-Carte System breaks down the conventional
kitchen structure into four individual task modules that can be arranged
accordingly. It adapts to any room setting and can be used along a wall, as
an island, or a space divider. The modules are held together by strong
magnets. Accessories like cutting boards and container units are made to
fit between modules, therefore making use of otherwise lost space.

Xeros Waterless Washing
Machine
Xeros uses polymer bead technology to reduce the use of water,
energy and chemicals to wash clothes
Xeros works by using the special beads with a little bit of detergent and
water to saturate the dirt and stains from clothes. The beads are
discoloured as a result and eventually need to be changed after between
500 and 1,000 washes.
The domestic machine will have a reduced number of cycles because of
the way the technology operates. The company hopes to develop a
super-absorbent bead and eliminate the need to even sort clothes.
Currently, hotels and laundries have been the principal customers.

Detergent Keeps Sweaty
Clothes Smelling Fresh
DeFUNKit uses enzymes to keep sweaty clothes from smelling for a
week, even after repeated use
DeFUNKit is a company started by material scientists and chemists from
the University of Oregon and was developed to reduce the
environmental impact of the eco-unfriendly clothing industry.
The scientists wanted to develop a way for people to do less laundry,
saving water and increasing clothing’s lifespan.
DeFUNKit works due to enzymes that allow it to break down odor-
causing bacteria. It bonds special deodorizing molecules directly to the
surface of the fabric that keep the bacteria from coming back.
After using the detergent, the clothes are good to wear for a full week.
The deodorizing molecules will last through 20 washes.

AQUS Greywater System
AQUS recycles your used sink water to flush your toilet
Toilets consume on average 40% of a household’s water use.
The AQUS Greywater System can potentially save a household up to
5,000 gallons of potable water each year. It works by using a small pump
activated by a water level sensor in the toilet tank to transfer grey water
to the toilet. It fills the reservoir alongside the toilet’s water supply, off-
setting 65% of the potable water needed per flush.
The compact system is small enough to fit comfortably inside a cabinet
and requires maintenance only once a year, reducing the complexity.

NEST Learning Thermostat
NEST Thermostat helps you save energy
The Nest Thermostat automatically adapts as your life and the seasons
change. The device uses built-in sensors and your phone’s location to
know when you’re away and automatically turns itself to off to save
energy. Additionally, it tracks how much energy you use in a day and
month and learns how to help you save energy.
Studies showed that Nest saved people an average of 10-12% on heating
bills and 15% on cooling bills, essentially paying for itself in two years.

In 2008, there were already more “things” connected to the
Internet than people. Sensors are a big part of the Internet of
Things. These can be attached to anything and can record and
send data back to the cloud, allowing businesses to collect specific
feedback on how products or equipment are used, when they
break, and even what users might want in the future. General
Electric estimates that convergence of machines, data and
analytics will become a $200 billion global industry in the next
two years. Connected homes will be a huge part of the Internet of
Things. By 2019, connected-home device sales are expected to
drive $490 billion in revenue.

Samsung’s Smart Refrigerator
Samsung’s Family Hub Fridge allows customers to see inside their
fridge remotely, order groceries and keep families organized
A 21.5 inch display in the door is the centrepiece of the smart fridge.
Inside the fridge, a set of cameras keeps tabs on items so that you know
when you need to get more milk and eggs. They also help keep you from
eating something that's been in the fridge longer than it should have
been. Additionally, you can search for recipes and even order the
necessary ingredients right there on the door.
Finally, the software provides a snapshot of your day, complete with
meetings, weather and more. If you're going to be late for dinner, you can
easily let everyone know.

Pantelligent offers real-time temperature feedback with an app
Pantelligent aims to solve the problem of overcooking or undercooking
food. The pan has a built-in temperature gauge which provides real-time
feedback on the surface temperature of food. It works in tandem with an
app that talks users through each step of a recipe and advises when to
turn the heat up or down. It even has an Autopilot feature which does a
lot of work for you, provided you have a WeMo Switch and a countertop
electric burner.

Mellow, the Smart Sous-Vide
Mellow prepares meals to order when you want them
The sous-vide machine uses an accompanying smart phone app to
control operations. The software is capable of learning from previous
experiences, so it will remember your preferences when it comes to
certain meals. It also provides real-time feedback, so that even when
you're out of the house, you can check to see how a meal is cooking.
Mellow is not only capable of heating the water but also of cooling it in
order to keep your food at refrigerator temperatures prior to cooking.
This means you can place the components of your meal into Mellow
hours or even days before you want them cooked. Mellow will begin the
cooking process at the appropriate moment so that the meal is ready for
the time you have specified.

Samsung’s SmartThings Hub
SmartThings is a home monitoring kit that lets users easily monitor,
control and secure their home from anywhere
Users simply download a free app for their smartphone, connect the
SmartThings Hub to an Internet router and add as many smart devices as
they would like. The Hub communicates with all of the different devices
and offers one point of contact for the user, allowing any home to be a
smart home.
Samsung created a range of SmartThings devices, including sensors that
can tell when you’ve entered or left a room, enabling you to automate
lights to turn on and off. The system works with devices from other
manufacturers as well.

The number of people 65 and older is projected to triple to 1.5
billion by 2050. Different estimates suggest that 80 or 90 percent
of older people want to live in their own homes. New construction
is making homes easier to navigate for people who might be
wheelchair-bound or have difficulty climbing stairs. Now, the
technology behind home appliances and fixtures is catching up
and safety is taking a high priority, as well as ergonomic and

GravitySpace is a new approach to tracking people indoors
GravitySpace is a pressure-sensing floor that senses objects in direct
contact with the ground, by first identifying objects based on their
texture. By applying inverse kinematics, GravitySpace can reconstruct
contents above the ground and can conclude what takes place in the
room above, such as users’ poses or collisions with virtual objects.
The intelligent floor has a wide range of applications, including improving
home security in the event of an intrusion and alerting first responders in
case of a medical emergency such as a fall.
