I.T. managers are amongst the most overlooked of office employees - they keep the email running smoothly, the computers up to date and safe from attacks, and the servers cool and happy. Without them, the office would be lost, but they don't receive the plaudits they deserve!
We took to I.T. and network management social network Spiceworks, and asked I.T. professionals to tell us what exactly it was about them that made them so awesome. The answers we got back ranged from the serious to the ridiculous, and at the end of the day it's this sense of humour (and willingness to poke fun at themselves) that makes them truly awesome.
I.T. Managers, take a bow.

Despite all the crap we get from users, we still fix their computers.
Despite all the crap we get from management, we still fix the
servers. Despite all the crap we get from directors, we still fix their
step son's cousin's iPad. We're not appreciated but we still do a damn
good job.

3. 2. We can read minds
IT’S BROKEN! IT’S BROKEN!
IT‘S BROKEN! IT’S BROKEN!
YOUR CAPS LOCK IS ON...
IT’S FIXED!
What makes us so awesome is being able to read users' minds when
they come up and tell me that "My computer is broken", when they
really mean "I can't log in because I've typed my password wrong”
-DailyLlama
4. 3. We fix problems just by looking at them
So, basically, after i’ve logged in, I go
to export, select PDF and then it
doesn’t ...ah...wait, it seems to be
working now. I hate you.
You're welcome
[We can] fix a "problem" by simply standing behind the user when they
show you the "problem". You get a pause, then the response "oh... it's
working now" or "... I hate you it’s working now!"

5. 4. We’re bi. bi-lingual.
I was doing this on

Yes. Yes i do.
Being able to converse in all languages by using our advanced mental

6. 5. We’re like special forces

Maybe you can compare I.T pros to the special forces of the work place.
We prevent bad stuff from happening by timely interventions and you
generaly dont see us. But when s**t hits the fan we sweep in, solve the
problem often going beyond the call of duty so that everybody else can
keep on doing an optimal job.
-Bart894
7. 6. We know we’re awesome… And that makes us awesome.
Go to my 127.0.0.1 and
I’ll give you sudo
access?
And that will fix it?
awww yea...
Well, clearly WE know we're awesome. The problem is that many
(most?) users don't understand what we do, and so think we're just
waiting for them to give us something to do. And then there's those
that think we're just an expensive cost to the company... *sigh*
-Jeff2262
8. 7. It's simple: we were all born this way
What makes us awesome? It's simple we were all born this way ;)
Seriously though it's the fact we can do all the above and still enjoy
what we do, it's not getting jaded by the task ahead but looking
forward to finding a solution. OK we don't get all the appreciation, but
we at least get to have a good mental exercise when solving problems
(unless the end user has forgotten a password).

10. 9. Personal hygiene
Science Fact.
most it Professionals have beards
so they have less face to wash.
Our outstanding social skills and personal hygiene! And that we
generally conduct ourselves in a highly professional manner,
work hard, and don't let it get to us that no matter what we do
it still isn't good enough or fast enough for our users. I need
some ice-cream.
- Facepalm

I always have a smile no matter how incredibly ignorant some users can be.
I’m Always pleasant and ready to help at a moment’s notice. 60+ hour
weeks to make sure everything gets done to ensure minimal disruption for
everyone in the company. In at 5:50 AM (EDT) today just to start moving a
user over to a new desktop so I don't interrupt their normal work
schedule...dedication.

12. 11. Multitasking
We multitask, collaborate, investigate, negotiate, compromise...
all for the sake of the people we work for. We know we're
awesome, they don't, but that's OK.

14. 13. We’re always learning
finally after 72 hours, i now
know everything there is to
know about AwesomeApp v1.2
v1.2 is so literally
yesterday, here’s the
stuff through on v2
We are often (medical folks being an exception) the only people in the
organisation that have to constantly re-educate ourselves, absorb
and understand entirely new technology and information, and stay on
top of a rapidly changing and evolving aspect of the business. We
constantly have to learn new things just to do our jobs and protect
the company's data and ability to function.
-Christaffa
15. 14. Resourcefulness
..And that will fix your
overheating problem.
We can't just educate ourselves on IT and be done. We have to
understand a decent amount about sales and marketing, accounting,
finance, inventory management, HR, etc. We are most often quite
literally the single most resourceful people in the company, yet few,
if any, other employees recognize that.
