2. What is Freecycle Network?
The Freecycle™ Network was established in 2003 as an email group in
Tucson, Arizona. The Freecycle™ Network has since grown into a global
concept spanning 85 countries. The goals of the organization are to keep
gently used items out of landfills and instill a sense of generosity within their
members, while limiting the items that end up in landfills all over the world.
The organization estimates it is keeping over 500 tons a day out of landfills.
The Freecycle™ market consists of environmentally conscious people who
value the idea of reusing items rather than throwing them away and
polluting global landfills. The no-strings concept also acts as a valuable way
for people to obtain items they may need, but may not have purchased
otherwise. The technical expertise of the users varies from someone with
minimal experience using web applications to the more advanced web user.

11. Our Findings
Source of Error Recommendations
How to search for a group is not clearly
communicated to users searching for a
group.
Make the search groups field more
prominent.
Upon signing up for new membership,
the user has to log in again to start using
the application. The user is unaware
they have signed up successfully.
Upon registration, provide feedback that
the registration was completed
successfully and automatically log users
into the site.
How to join groups, view groups, and
general use of the application are not
clearly communicated to users who log
in for the first time.
Create a “My Account” page that
prominently displays groups users
belong to as well as a leaderboard
outlining next action items such as Add
Groups or Create Post.
Options in the search filter interface are
not clearly communicated to users
conducting a search query.
Redesign the search form.
Returning to search results is not clearly
communicated to users viewing a post.
Include a return to search results link
that automatically resubmits the search
query.
12. Our Recommendation
The current process to sign
up a user to search posts
requires 19 steps
Our recommendation require 6 steps
Doing our testing we focused on the Chicago area. This is the main page for the Freecycle Chicago Group. Here users would become members of the site and/or become a member of the group. Users could also browse to see what is available. The orange is where the user would go to search for items and the green is the user account information.
This is where the user would go to become a registered user of freecycle.org.
The general results indicated that the majority of the users found the site to be frustrating and not easy to navigate. The users also felt that the site failed to provide feedback during tasks. Most of the users wanted to recommend the website but thought there needed to be fixes to the site before they would do so. Task 3 – Asked the users to search for moving boxes in the Chicago Freecycle group. This task provided mixed results, as some users could not understand what it meant to join a group or where to go to search for moving boxes. We found the concept of “Groups” to be confusing and require a lot of steps for the users.
The top 5 issues that were found through analysis of each user test are the following items. How to search for a group is not clearly communicated to users searching for a group. Our recommendation for this issue is to make the search groups field more prominent and user friendly. Upon signing up for new membership, the user has to log in again to start using the application. The user is unaware they have signed up successfully. We recommend providing the user feedback that the registration was completed successfully and have the site automatically log the user in.How to join groups, view groups, and general use of the application are not clearly communicated to users who log in for the first time.Create a “My Account” page that displays the groups the user belongs to. We also recommend a leaderboard outlining the next actions items such as Add Groups of Create Post.Options in the search filter interface are not clearly communicated to users conducting a search query. The search form and results should be redesigned and a search function should also be integrated into the site. Returning to search results is not clearly communicated to users viewing a post.A search results page should be displayed encompassing the results and the navigation to iterate and return to results.
The current process to sign a new user up on Freecycle, join a group, login and provide the ability to view posts, requires 19 steps. With the recommendations suggested the same tasks would only require 6 steps.
The homepage has been altered to highlight the sign up and login process. Currently, the site has this information much less salient for users to know where to go to login or join the site.
The signup form has been altered to incorporate the zipcode the user wishes to be associated with. This will eliminate the steps of joining a home group pursuant to signing up as a new user. This step incorporates both tasks into one process. The form has also been spaced out in order to make the individual steps of Agreeing to the Terms of Service and completing the Captcha Antibot. This will ensure that the Terms of service is not missed in the sign up process.
Based on our recommendations the search page will now appear at the top of the group’s page. The search attributes will be easier to find in the new search box located at the top of the page. The attributes are also framed in on the left-hand side in order highlight each option available for searching posts.
