Cajun Cooking 10 Unique Features Of Cajun Food
Cajun cooking is a style of cooking that comes from the French-speaking region of
Louisiana.
It is a very diverse style that has influences of French cuisine while also featuring local
foods and Native American, African, and Southern traditions. There are many fantastic
facets that make Cajun food unique.
Here, ten of the excellent features that make Cajun food so delicious will be discussed.
1. Three pot dishes
An authentic Cajun meal will be separated into three pots. The first pot will contain the
main dish, the second will feature rice, or some form of protein, and the third will have
local vegetables.
2. Rice
Rice, especially steamed rice, is a very common and delicious part of Cajun cooking. It is
featured in many popular dishes, like shrimp and rice, and grows locally in the Southern
regions were Cajun cuisine originated.
3. Green bell pepper, onion, and celery
These three vegetables are the three most important in Cajun cooking. They often
comprise sauces and will often be featured in the third pot of a traditional three-pot
dinner.
4. Gumbo
Gumbo is a stew produced from stock, meat or fish, the holy trinity of vegetables
mentioned above, as well as thickener and dried sassafras powder. This is a staple of

the most common fish to be served in various dishes, including jambalaya and gumbo.
10. Shrimp
Just like crawfish and catfish, shrimp is plentiful and often makes up the seafood part of
a dish. Especially when paired with rice and seasoned with spices, shrimp are a stable
Cajun product.

How To Make Your Veggies Delicious
Ever since you were young, you were told to eat your vegetables. You may have heard this
from your parents, from kids programming or from your school. Whoever you heard it
from, it's the truth you need to eat your vegetables!
We get so many essential nutrients from our vegetables, it makes it impossible to skip
them without health consequences.
This is especially so for leafy greens, which are packed with vitamins and minerals that
we need some of which we can only get from them.
But, what if you hate the taste of vegetables? Well, you aren't alone. A lot of people have
a bad taste in their mouth (pun intended) when it comes to veggies.
A lot of people were forced to eat them growing up, which makes them resentful as
adults.
Also, many people don't know how to properly cook vegetables, so the exposure that you
may have gotten to vegetables may have been unpleasant.
Whatever the case, you need to eat your vegetables, but to do so you'll want them to be
palatable. That's why you need to learn how to properly prep them to make them
delicious.
First off, consider the many recipes there are out there for vegetables. We are in a day and
age where there are more vegans and vegetarians than ever.
Because of this, there are tons of cookbooks and sites online devoted to how to cook
veggies. I often find my best side dishes by looking at how the main dishes are cooked for
vegetarian dishes.
I've also learned to saute most of my veggies in high quality oil, making sure to add a
decent amount of spices as I go.
The oil helps to hold the spices, and it adds flavor in and of itself. If you saute them with
cloves of garlic, you've got yourself a very flavorful dish.
If you can train yourself to eat veggies raw, even better. When you cook them, you cook
some of the nutrients out. If you can't stand them raw, though, start with cooking them
with plenty of spices and work them into your dishes.
It's important to eat your vegetables. Find the right recipes, experiment and before you

Seafood Tips
A lot of people love seafood and it's hard to argue against them. Seafood is some of the
healthiest and best tasting food you can find in the world and if you live near any coast
it's almost always in constant supply.
The hard part when it comes to seafood is many people aren't as educated on how to
cook it.
This might be because we just aren't as accustomed to cooking with it or simply because
the methods required are a little different than traditional cooking for meats.
The first thing you want to educate yourself on is what kind of seafood you should be
eating. There are plenty of things that are tasty, but you want to steer towards the food
that is also the best for your body.
For fish you want to focus on salmon and halibut. Both of these types of fish are loaded
with protein and omega-3s with little fat content.
They can be grilled or baked, but when grilling keep in mind that fish is a fragile meat
and can frail apart easily. If grilling on an open grill cover it with tin foil first.
Fish can also be cooked deliciously by baking it. To do this method take your selected
piece of fish and wrap it in a piece of aluminum foil.
Place some oregano, a slice of butter, and a couple lemon wedges in with your fish as you
let it bake to add taste. Be sure to check your fish periodically for your desired level of
completion.
The other popular type of seafood commonly sought out are crab and lobster. Both of
these foods can be boiled or baked, traditionally boiled.
The most important part about crab and lobster isn't the cooking process per se, but the
selection process.
Selecting the right piece of meat is everything and there are a few tricks to help you
identify which lobster and crab are the best.
The most identifying being their color. You want to seek out a more naturally crimson or
dark colored shell versus a grey or lighter colored shell.
The grey color is an indication that the animal is already going bad and should be
avoided. Once you have the lobster or crab you want simply boil untiled cooked and

Why Fresh Is Better
The choice between fresh, frozen and canned (yes canned) is an ongoing debate between
consumers.
While some people claim that canned tastes good, others say that fresh is the way to go. I
happen the fall on the fresh side of things.
Sure, frozen and canned will last longer, which gives them the appearance of being more
affordable. In reality, though, the difference is negligible, as long as you plan on cooking
the fresh fruits and veggies in the next couple of days.
Here's the thing I know it's tough to go to the grocery store a few times a week, but if you
time it out right, you should be able to keep your fruits and veggies fresh, and only go to
the grocery store two to three times a week.
I personally believe that you are giving up flavor when you go with anything other than
fresh.
As I've said, people like frozen and canned, but that's often because that is what they
grew up on.
If you are looking for depth of flavor, and you want to taste what your fruits and
vegetables actually taste like, you'll want to go with fresh.
As far as nutrients go, this is a bit tricky. Overall, canned will have the least amount of
nutrients, often due to the preservation process.
Frozen and fresh are up for debate.
If you can get truly fresh fruits and vegetables, you'll get the most nutrients possible.
This is pretty intuitive.
A lot of fruits and veggies that you get at the grocery store, though, were picked before
they could fully ripen. Because of this, they don't have all of the nutrients that they could
have.
Still, while they are in season, you're more likely to get a higher dose of nutrients (and of
course, better flavor).
Off season, though, it's a lot more difficult to ship fresh veggies, and by the time they get
to you, they aren't as fresh as they could be.

Research has indicated that freezing the vegetables will help to lock in a lot of the
nutrients, although the process they go through may cause some of the nutrients to
degrade.
If possible, I suggest always going fresh. If you don't have the option, then frozen and
finally, canned.

Seafood is some of the healthiest and best tasting food you can find in the world and if you live near any coast it's almost always in constant supply. The hard part when it comes to seafood is many people aren't as educated on how to cook it. This might be because we just aren't as accustomed to cooking with it or simply because the methods required are a little different than traditional cooking for meats. The first thing you want to educate yourself on is what kind of seafood you should be eating. There are plenty of things that are tasty, but you want to steer towards the food that is also the best for your body. For fish you want to focus on salmon and halibut. Both of these types of fish are loaded with protein and omega-3s with little fat content. They can be grilled or baked, but when grilling keep in mind that fish is a fragile meat and can frail apart easily. If grilling on an open grill cover it with tin foil first. Fish can also be cooked deliciously by baking it. To do this method take your selected piece of fish and wrap it in a piece of aluminum foil. Place some oregano, a slice of butter, and a couple lemon wedges in with your fish as you let it bake to add taste. Be sure to check your fish periodically for your desired level of completion. The other popular type of seafood commonly sought out are crab and lobster. Both of these foods can be boiled or baked, traditionally boiled. The most important part about crab and lobster isn't the cooking process per se, but the selection process. Selecting the right piece of meat is everything and there are a few tricks to help you identify which lobster and crab are the best. The most identifying being their color. You want to seek out a more naturally crimson or dark colored shell versus a grey or lighter colored shell. The grey color is an indication that the animal is already going bad and should be avoided.   • 11. Why Fresh Is Better The choice between fresh, frozen and canned (yes canned) is an ongoing debate between consumers. While some people claim that canned tastes good, others say that fresh is the way to go. I happen the fall on the fresh side of things. Sure, frozen and canned will last longer, which gives them the appearance of being more affordable. In reality, though, the difference is negligible, as long as you plan on cooking the fresh fruits and veggies in the next couple of days. Here's the thing I know it's tough to go to the grocery store a few times a week, but if you time it out right, you should be able to keep your fruits and veggies fresh, and only go to the grocery store two to three times a week. I personally believe that you are giving up flavor when you go with anything other than fresh. As I've said, people like frozen and canned, but that's often because that is what they grew up on. If you are looking for depth of flavor, and you want to taste what your fruits and vegetables actually taste like, you'll want to go with fresh. As far as nutrients go, this is a bit tricky. Overall, canned will have the least amount of nutrients, often due to the preservation process. Frozen and fresh are up for debate. If you can get truly fresh fruits and vegetables, you'll get the most nutrients possible. This is pretty intuitive. A lot of fruits and veggies that you get at the grocery store, though, were picked before they could fully ripen. Because of this, they don't have all of the nutrients that they could have. Still, while they are in season, you're more likely to get a higher dose of nutrients (and of course, better flavor).
