Brief Description of the Collection
3. Raphael (1483-1520)
Around 1504, Raphael was
commissioned by the
Franciscan nuns of Perugia to
paint an altarpiece for the
Church of St Anthony of Padua.
4. Issac Fuller (1606?-72).
It will become clear in this slideshow
that English paintings in the 17C was
dominated by continental European.
Continental painter like Holbein and
Van Dyck spent much of their time
painting the English aristocracy.
Issac Fuller was trained in France and
worked in Oxford and London. His
works included portraits, religious
subjects and decorative paintings.
15. Reni (1610-1690)
“Guido Reni felt that the purpose of
art was to show us a beauty perfect
than we could ever hope to see in a
real world. This almost naked young
man is the embodiment of that ideal
beauty. Reni has made a pattern out
of his posture – with arms and legs
alternately bent and extended. He
has shaped his limbs with graceful
sweeping lines. He had turn a boy

26. Lely (1618-80)
Peter Lely was
originally Dutch, but
spent nearly all his
professional career in
England.
27. Andrea Soldi (1703-71)
“Louis-Francois Roubiliac was a
French sculptor who worked in
England, one of the four most
prominent sculptors in London
working in the Rococo style. He
was described by Margaret
Whinney as ‘probably the most
accomplished sculptor ever to

29. Pynacker (1620-73)
Pynacker was a Dutch painter. He went to Italy for three years and got married. His
paintings are considered as Italianate landscape.
30. Huysum is better known for his flower paintings (see next slide).

33. Murillo, a Spanish is particularly well-known
for his realist paintings of lively everyday
portraits of flower girls, children, beggars
etc. He also produced many religious
works.

46. Reynolds (1723-92)
The English paintings after the deposition of
James II, marked the beginning of European
Baroque style in England.
It was in the early 18C the big names like
Reynolds and Gainsborough began to appear.
Both of them were primarily portrait painters.
At the same time, the British Empire grew
and the Industrial Revolution began.
Joshua Reynolds was a founder and first
president of the Royal Academy of Arts.
47. Gainsborough (1727-88)
Gainsborough was a leading
portrait painter in England.
He was Reynolds main rivals.
Unlike Reynolds, he avoids
references to Italian
Renaissance art or the
Antique, and show his sitters
in fashionable contemporary
dress

Here is a good example of a
typical Gainsborough’s
portraits, with ladies in fine
dresses.
Gainsborough was also a
foundation member of the
Royal Academy. He exhibited in
the Academy 1769, but
quarreled with the Academy in
1773 and 1777 exhibitions.
49. Lawrence (1769-1830)
He was the leading British
portrait painter of the early 19th
century. He painted royalties
and notable personalities of the
day with his flattering style.
Thomas Lawrence was a child
prodigy and largely self-taught,
at the age of 10 he was making
accomplished portrait in crayon.
At the age of 20, he painted
Queen Charlotte in one sitting. It
was one of his most brilliant of
royal portraits, but it was
rejected by the then king and
queen.
