HOW WE MADE $4,000+
From One Blog Post
ALL IT TAKES IS ONE GREAT POST
TO PUT YOU ON THE MAP
This is how we made our One Great Post
…on a brand new website
After experiencing success with starting our own business online, Ben
and I wanted to branch out and help other people do the same.
So we created Breaking The One Percent- a blog designed to help
readers with all aspects of entrepreneurship and personal finance.
It’s a headline that’s almost impossible to ignore:
Make Money at Home: Ideas for an Extra $1,000 Each Month
This was one of the first posts on our website, but it’s also one of the
most useful. The article lists 11 ways to make extra money, ranging
from the quick buck to more time-intensive hustles.
P.S.- Blogging is one of the items on the list (and also my favorite).
Here’s our step by step guide to start your own blog, if you haven’t
WHAT MADE THIS POST
It has a title that just begs you to click on the article
It offers a solution to a problem
It’s optimized to be easily shared
It’s easy to read
It uses affiliate links effectively
We leveraged Pinterest to an extreme degree
1. YOUR HEADLINE IS CRAZY IMPORTANT
Your headline should accomplish two major goals for each blog post:
• It should compel people to click on it and promote a tangible
outcome to those that do read your article.
• It should contain a relevant long-tailed keyword that will help the
article perform well for search engine traffic.
Your headline is the only chance you get to convince someone they
should read your stuff. Take your time and create a well thought out
title that accomplishes what you want, while staying true to the content
of your article.
2. PEOPLE WANT SOLUTIONS.
GIVE THEM JUST THAT!
With so much content floating out there on the
internet, you really need your stuff to be useful in
order to stand out from the crowd.
Even though this particular article is a list of 11 ideas
to make extra money, it contains over 40 outbound
links. That’s a lot of resources, all stuffed into one
It always comes back to adding value to your readers.
And if you’re not giving them value, why are you
Pinterest3. MAKE IT SHAREABLE
It’s hard to make money from an
article if you are not generating
traffic. And it’s hard to generate
traffic if your content is not easily
4. IT MUST BE EASY TO READ
Forget every term paper you ever wrote. If you write
your blog articles the same way, you won’t make it
Does this look like a fun read to you? No. No it does not.
Tips to make your content more readable:
• Break it up using headings
• Don’t use big words. They’re an easy way to lose your readers.
• Be conversational
• Use short sentences with simple structure (i.e., avoid run on sentences like
So don’t write your blog posts like this.
5. STRATEGICALLY USE AFFILIATE LINKS
Affiliate marketing is a form of advertising that can be incredibly lucrative. It’s
how we’ve made over $4,000 from a single blog post.
Basically, companies pay you to refer readers to their products and
services. If one of your readers ends up buying from the company (or
signing up) after clicking on your referral link, you get a commission on that
This is great because you don’t have to deal with any product delivery or
customer support issues, and you can refer thousands and thousands of
This particular article contains several
affiliate links related to making money.
Between paid online surveys, driving
for Uber, and opening an investment
account with TradeKing, we are
promoting a lot of different
companies in the post.
Here’s the trick, though:
Put your highest converting items
FIRST in your content.
Items Listed First
Putting your highest converting affiliates first, even if they aren’t the highest
paying, is a really smart move to maximize your earnings.
6. USE PINTEREST ABOVE ALL
OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA
Long story short, Pinterest was where we got 99% of our traffic to this
article. And we didn’t pay a dime to promote it.
Our 30-day old account reaches over 100k people
per month, with no paid advertising.
