ABSTRACT
This internship report serves the purpose to record the details of my industrial training which was
conducted in Influasia Sdn. Bhd, a renowned news media publication in Bangsar area. This report will
cover the details of my internship in the editorial department for a duration of three months which began
from the 22nd
of March, till the 11th of June 2021 at World of Buzz.
My objectives and expectations for my internship at World of Buzz were to firstly enhance my
communication skills, professional behaviour, and computer skills. Throughout my internship as an
editorial intern, I learned how to sharpen my speaking, writing, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. I
managed to adapt quite well in the professional world after constantly having to network with different
people and also writing articles to meet client’s expectations.
I improved my computer skills as well, since having to work at home required a lot of computer work
and also perfected my professional behaviour, maintaining a positive workplace attitude with my co-
workers.
ACKNOWLDGEMENT
I would like to thank my editors and also my colleagues who were the full-time writers at World of
Buzz that carefully guided me during the period of my internship. My editor Esther Liew always
corrected my articles with clear and concise advice, which made my writing process a lot easier.
Another colleague of mine, Alena was the person who gave me the most writing tips and showed me
which specific editing applications to use when inserting images. I have also collaborated with other
writers Thermesh and Syuhada when writing an article and in the process, I have learned many things.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge my supervisor Miss Vhysh who is the editor in chief of World of
Buzz and the person who had employed me. She has given me various projects and tasks that I am very
grateful to have been a part of. Every experience that I have gained during the course of my internship
is because of the guidance that I have received from everyone at work. I would also like to acknowledge
my MMU internship university advisor, Miss Hor Yen Yi who helped to guide me draft my resume and
cover letter. Miss Yen Yi was also a very attentive supervisor and I always went to her if I needed
advice on anything related to my internship.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my family, and friends for their support,
constructive suggestions and also criticism.
PART 1: The Company
1.1 Company Background
Influasia is a digital media group based in Malaysia and is established in 2016. Headquartered in KL
EcoCity, Influasia owns four publications: World of Buzz, Lobak Merah, Noodou and In Real Life
which is a publication which focuses on personal stories of Malaysians. The company is co-founded by
Chris Khristie and Michelle Tan. The duo started the company after a conversation they had at a mamak
stall back in 2015.
The company was built to create and deliver content to young adults and millennials. In 2016, the
company created Lobak Merah, a publication specifically catered for the Malay demographic, World
of Buzz for English news and Noodou, a publication for Mandarin speaking Malaysians the year after.
In 2019, Chris Khristie and Michelle Tan were awarded the title Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia. They were
amongst 11 other Malaysians who received the title.
I was attached to the editorial department at World of Buzz where I worked with several other full-time
writers and editorial interns. I was supervised by the editor in chief, Vhyshnawi. Every day I am tasked
to produce easily-consumable content by publishing the best in viral, entertainment, life, tech, and local
news. World of Buzz editorial section is corelated with the PR brand representatives, this means that
usually if we wrote news related to certain brands, we would have to consult with the brand
representatives first to make sure if we could cover it. This is a way of how the company functions in
terms of task execution.
The editorial team is also very particular when it comes to news credibility since we only write stories
that are legitimate and authentic. Writers will have to go through lots of process in order to verify the
news and also to acquire the permission of an individual in order for the story to be published. Every
single phone call that we make is then kept for record in a black book so we do not lose contact with
the individual. This rule was created for a safer interaction, to prevent people from giving falsified info
to writers. This new change was definitely a bonus.
PART 2: Training Projects/Tasks
2.1 Writing Articles (Task 1)
2.1.1 Description
Every weekday we were required to find articles or unique social stories online and write at least 3
articles a day for World of Buzz. The goal was to write 18-20 articles a day to hit the daily quota each
month. This is a repeated task, so every day I had to find articles from news sites like Malay Mail,
Guang Ming Daily, TheStar and so on then rewrite them without plagiarising from the original source.
For certain stories, we would have to reach-out and interview sources for permission and most
importantly, if it’s a negative story that involves two or more parties we would have to get each
individuals comments. So, our articles do not seem biased.
2.1.2 Roles/Responsibilities
My role as an editorial intern was exactly like the full-time writers, we had to write stories every day to
be published. We could not source from certain competitor publications so we had to be very mindful
of that. After finding news, we would have to ask the editors if the piece is appropriate to be written.
After getting their approval, then could we only proceed.
2.1.3 Achievement of Task/Project
I have written about 90 articles on World of Buzz throughout my 3 months of internship. Looking for
a new story to write about everyday was no easy feat, I carefully observed which news sites that my
full-time colleagues usually found their stories from. Through that I was able to find news faster and
easier. I achieved the highest engagement rate as the author of a story that I wrote, it got the most likes
on WOB’s social media site for April and my supervisor was proud of me.
Writing certain articles which required me to speak to witnesses and people through the phone actually
widened my contacts and I managed to network with many experienced people. For example, I wrote a
story once about a grab food rider who did a good deed to a customer. The customer used to be the
assistant chief sub-editor of New Straits Times Press, we are now connected on LinkedIn.
One of the best articles that I have written was about an old 84-year-old grandmother who still persisted
to continue working in a restaurant peeling onions. Many readers were impressed and touched by the
old lady’s determination to work despite her age. My article received the most likes at 28,000 for the
month of April on Instagram.
One of the best articles that I have written was about an old 84-year-old grandmother who still persisted
to continue working in a restaurant peeling onions. Many readers were impressed and touched by the
old lady’s determination to work despite her age. My article received the most likes at 28,000 for the
month of April on Instagram.
2.1.4 Conclusion
In some days, I was not able to fulfil the requirement of 3 articles a day, because it was hard to find
sources. But nevertheless, I still tried my best to write as much articles as I possibly can. With the help
of all the full timer writers and other editorial interns, we were able to achieve our target article numbers
in a day.
I was faced with challenges such as people asking me to take down articles, and also people giving
me falsified information. All these served as a lesson for me, new rules were made by my editor and
through that, things began to run more smoothly.
2.2 Press Meet at Sime Darby Ara Damansara (Task 2)
2.2.1 Description
This was my first press meet experience, and my supervisor Miss Vhysh wanted me to go on the field
and attend a Sime Darby launch at Ara Damansara Motors. The event was attended by many journalists
from different publications, and we were all given a special QR code to enter the event since it was held
during the CMCO last April.
I was accompanied by one of the brand representatives at WOB Mr Luke. The event was to launch their
new Sime Darby Motors Centre and they gave us a tour of all 6 of their showrooms such as Ford,
Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Porshe and Jaguar Land Rover. The event lasted from 9am to 12.40pm.
2.2.2 Roles/Responsibilities
My role as an editorial intern was to collect the press kit during the beginning of the event and also
listen to the speeches. I was also required to take down notes and snap photos during the event for it to
be included into the article later on. Although there were no deadlines, I decided to hand over the press
kit to my colleague on the same day (April 12) for immediate publication.
2.2.3 Achievement of Task/Project
The project goal was to give me the experience of how journalists attended press meets. After the event
ended, I handed a scanned copy of the press kit over to another colleague of mine who was in charge
of publishing the article. I sent her all the photos that I took and also other relevant notes.
The event was attended by many journalists from different publications which made me expand my
network with many media related people. I spoke and exchanged contacts with 2 journalists from a
Malay publication called Sinar Harian and also BERNAMA.
2.2.4 Conclusion
The project did achieve the project goal, which was to give me the experience of how journalists
attended press meets. Fortunately, no challenges were faced, just pleasant and new experiences.
2.3 Article for a client (Task 3)
2.3.1 Description
I was asked to write a client-based article by Miss Vhysh during the 10th
week of my internship. The
client was the founder of a called Constant Meals. I was tasked to reach out to the client and gather as
much info as I could about the start-up company for the article. The company then sent me 5 meals
from their menu for me to do a taste test and review it on my article but I was also advised by my
advisor to preferably give good reviews and comments. The goal of the task was to highlight the fact
that Constant Meals helps individuals to be consistent with a healthier lifestyle, all while having access
to a variety of foods that taste exceptional.
2.3.2 Roles/Responsibilities
My role for this task was to follow exactly what the client’s company focuses on and try to put in all
the necessary and appropriate facts into the article. The client’s backstory was one of the elements that
I included into the article as well because that reflected how the company was even started in the first
place. Five meals from Constant Meals were sent to my home on Saturday June 7th
. There was no
deadline as to when the article had to be completed, but I decided to complete it before Monday.
2.3.3 Achievement of Task/Project
I managed to write up an article according to the clients needs. All pictures that were included were
taken by myself and I also managed to capture the importance of healthy eating inside my article. My
reviewing skills has improved as well, I tried to get most of my inspiration from article segments at
World of Buzz called WOB Eats. WOB Eats is where writers taste test food items from brands that
want an article written on World of Buzz.
2.3.4 Conclusion
The task managed to fulfil the brands goals, which were to highlight that Constant Meals helps
individuals to be consistent with a healthier lifestyle, all while having access to a variety of foods that
taste exceptional. The client was slightly rude to me when he found out I ate 2 meals on the same day
although I did not seem to find any sort of problem in that. That was a small challenge that I managed
to overcome by answering to the client in a polite and professional manner.
PART 3: Training Analysis
3.1 Skills and Knowledge Gained
At World of Buzz, I have learned to enhance mainly my communication skills, professional behaviour,
and computer skills. There was a lot of over the phone conversations with potential clients, witnesses
and people in general that I had to speak with in order to get information, details regarding a particular
incident or statement. This helped me to build my confidence and also professional behaviour in the
working industry for I had to speak politely and also listen attentively.
Although the company was closed since the MCO was being implemented and workers had to work
from home, I still regularly communicated with my colleagues through Slack (a platform for office
related work). I connected with each of them closely and also observed how they worked and managed
things. Slowly following and working my way up. There was not any presenting that I had to do, but
we did have team meetings every consecutive week to discuss on the monthly KPI’s and rules and
regulations.
I also learned how to handle WordPress really well and I have noticed that it was very different from
the usual WordPress account people owned. There was a lot of things that I had to learn and get used
to, for example we had to check if our article had a featured image, if we had included tags, and wrote
the article in the proper format. All these were mandatory to be checked once the article was completed,
the step-by-step instruction was given to us and was called the editorial starter pack.
3.2 Application of University Subject Knowledge
During twelve weeks of internship, I have accumulated various experiences and wider new knowledge
through activities and tasks had been assigned to me. My beloved supervisor, Vhyshnawi had
encouraged me to do a diversified range of tasks across the department. In this section, I am going to
relate my experience with courses that I have taken in MMU especially Strategic Communication core
courses.
Some of the courses that I found most applicable in my workplace were, such as English for academic
purposes, Fundamentals of Grammar, Effective Writing, and Professional Image and Etiquette. Mostly,
the writing-based subjects were most applicable to me since I wrote articles most of the time. Back
when I was taking up the subject Effective Writing, I learned the importance of including ethos, pathos
and logos in my writing. This helped me significantly in my article write-ups because most of the time
I wrote news that has to either appeal to an audience's emotions in order to evoke feelings. For example,
news articles such as people in need seeking for donations from the public, using pathos is an effective
technique to use in writing since emotions are powerful motivators and they grab people's attention,
making them want to act.
Fundamentals of Grammar and English for academic purposes were some of the subjects that thought
me that good grammar is key to effective communication. I learned how to provide information that
helps the reader's comprehension. My good use of grammar in my articles showed that I was diligent
and have an eye for detail. Professional Image and Etiquette was a very vital subject that I have taken
up quite recently, I learned that professional image speaks volumes about myself and it will help me
develop and establish a good reputation in all business situations. My reputation was extremely
important to me while I was working with WOB, hence I threaded carefully and made sure I maintained
good and appropriate manners with my superiors.
I look forward to taking up Media Law on my final semester because that subject was taken by my older
sister and according to her it teaches laws that regulate the acclivities of the media. Such laws like laws
of defamation, sedition, copyright, plagiarism, privacy. All these were very much profound during the
course of my training and I look forward to learn more about it.
3.3 Suitability of Placement
I applied and choose this placement because I am a passionate writer and journalism has always been
my first career choice option. Although I did not go under the sun covering news like real journalists,
I discovered that we still had the opportunity to share real and authentic news with other fellow
Malaysians who equally enjoyed our stories as much as we did writing them.
Some of the reasons as to why my placement was suitable are such as follows:
• Challenging and relevant for an internship student: My internship position was an opportunity
that stepped up from what I would do as a normal intern. There was a lot of learning involved.
My editorial placement was linked to my study and my long-term career goals.
• Engaging and motivating: I had a good understanding of what I can gain out of my placement
and be motivated by the challenge.
• Real opportunities provided by the employer: I was treated as an employee of the
organization and not as a student at a university. I was fully integrated into the workforce and
given all the opportunities and support that any other staff member would have.
• Carefully monitored and reflected upon: My welfare as an intern was ensured and the
expectations of all parties were met. My reflection during the end of my placement was seen
as very important in building a quality experience overall for the company.
This editorial and content creating placement is very much suitable for a Strategic communication
student like myself but I also would like to explore more into the fields of Public Relations or
copywriting as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend this training to others in my programme.
3.4 SWOT Analysis
Strengths
•I have a way with words and investigative skills

be flawed at times.

from many people.

•Certain people who may disagree to my
article.
•Technology is also creating a need for writers
and editors who are able and willing to adapt
to changes in the industry.
SWOT
Internal
External
Positive Negative
PART 4: Conclusion
After the course of my internship, there was an exit interview held via google meet. My supervisor Miss
Vhysh asked me several questions about weather the company had any limitations that they could
improve on. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience and would want to venture into
news reporting, or maybe copywriting as well in the future. Creating content for news organisations is
can be challenging in a world where journalists may face intimidation for exercising their fundamental
right to freedom of expression. But this job is intriguing to me and I will continue working my may
towards what I am passionate about.
What I mostly love about World of Buzz is how the co-founders treat their workers. We are treated like
family and although we keep things professional at work, all the co-workers get along really well.
Michelle (the co-founder of WOB) tries to include interns in the video contents that they create for
audiences. I was fortunate enough to be a part of that and I appreciate the positive work environment I
have trained in.

Lessons learned:

(Describe problems encountered, reasons for non-completion of planned tasks, lessons learned, how to improve, tasks

  • 4. ABSTRACT This internship report serves the purpose to record the details of my industrial training which was conducted in Influasia Sdn. Bhd, a renowned news media publication in Bangsar area. This report will cover the details of my internship in the editorial department for a duration of three months which began from the 22nd of March, till the 11th of June 2021 at World of Buzz. My objectives and expectations for my internship at World of Buzz were to firstly enhance my communication skills, professional behaviour, and computer skills. Throughout my internship as an editorial intern, I learned how to sharpen my speaking, writing, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. I managed to adapt quite well in the professional world after constantly having to network with different people and also writing articles to meet client’s expectations. I improved my computer skills as well, since having to work at home required a lot of computer work and also perfected my professional behaviour, maintaining a positive workplace attitude with my co- workers.
  • 5. ACKNOWLDGEMENT I would like to thank my editors and also my colleagues who were the full-time writers at World of Buzz that carefully guided me during the period of my internship. My editor Esther Liew always corrected my articles with clear and concise advice, which made my writing process a lot easier. Another colleague of mine, Alena was the person who gave me the most writing tips and showed me which specific editing applications to use when inserting images. I have also collaborated with other writers Thermesh and Syuhada when writing an article and in the process, I have learned many things. Finally, I would like to acknowledge my supervisor Miss Vhysh who is the editor in chief of World of Buzz and the person who had employed me. She has given me various projects and tasks that I am very grateful to have been a part of. Every experience that I have gained during the course of my internship is because of the guidance that I have received from everyone at work. I would also like to acknowledge my MMU internship university advisor, Miss Hor Yen Yi who helped to guide me draft my resume and cover letter. Miss Yen Yi was also a very attentive supervisor and I always went to her if I needed advice on anything related to my internship. Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my family, and friends for their support, constructive suggestions and also criticism.
  • 6. PART 1: The Company 1.1 Company Background Influasia is a digital media group based in Malaysia and is established in 2016. Headquartered in KL EcoCity, Influasia owns four publications: World of Buzz, Lobak Merah, Noodou and In Real Life which is a publication which focuses on personal stories of Malaysians. The company is co-founded by Chris Khristie and Michelle Tan. The duo started the company after a conversation they had at a mamak stall back in 2015. The company was built to create and deliver content to young adults and millennials. In 2016, the company created Lobak Merah, a publication specifically catered for the Malay demographic, World of Buzz for English news and Noodou, a publication for Mandarin speaking Malaysians the year after. In 2019, Chris Khristie and Michelle Tan were awarded the title Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia. They were amongst 11 other Malaysians who received the title. I was attached to the editorial department at World of Buzz where I worked with several other full-time writers and editorial interns. I was supervised by the editor in chief, Vhyshnawi. Every day I am tasked to produce easily-consumable content by publishing the best in viral, entertainment, life, tech, and local news. World of Buzz editorial section is corelated with the PR brand representatives, this means that usually if we wrote news related to certain brands, we would have to consult with the brand representatives first to make sure if we could cover it. This is a way of how the company functions in terms of task execution. The editorial team is also very particular when it comes to news credibility since we only write stories that are legitimate and authentic. Writers will have to go through lots of process in order to verify the news and also to acquire the permission of an individual in order for the story to be published. Every single phone call that we make is then kept for record in a black book so we do not lose contact with the individual. This rule was created for a safer interaction, to prevent people from giving falsified info to writers. This new change was definitely a bonus.
  • 7. PART 2: Training Projects/Tasks 2.1 Writing Articles (Task 1) 2.1.1 Description Every weekday we were required to find articles or unique social stories online and write at least 3 articles a day for World of Buzz. The goal was to write 18-20 articles a day to hit the daily quota each month. This is a repeated task, so every day I had to find articles from news sites like Malay Mail, Guang Ming Daily, TheStar and so on then rewrite them without plagiarising from the original source. For certain stories, we would have to reach-out and interview sources for permission and most importantly, if it’s a negative story that involves two or more parties we would have to get each individuals comments. So, our articles do not seem biased. 2.1.2 Roles/Responsibilities My role as an editorial intern was exactly like the full-time writers, we had to write stories every day to be published. We could not source from certain competitor publications so we had to be very mindful of that. After finding news, we would have to ask the editors if the piece is appropriate to be written. After getting their approval, then could we only proceed. 2.1.3 Achievement of Task/Project I have written about 90 articles on World of Buzz throughout my 3 months of internship. Looking for a new story to write about everyday was no easy feat, I carefully observed which news sites that my full-time colleagues usually found their stories from. Through that I was able to find news faster and easier. I achieved the highest engagement rate as the author of a story that I wrote, it got the most likes on WOB’s social media site for April and my supervisor was proud of me. Writing certain articles which required me to speak to witnesses and people through the phone actually widened my contacts and I managed to network with many experienced people. For example, I wrote a story once about a grab food rider who did a good deed to a customer. The customer used to be the assistant chief sub-editor of New Straits Times Press, we are now connected on LinkedIn. One of the best articles that I have written was about an old 84-year-old grandmother who still persisted to continue working in a restaurant peeling onions. Many readers were impressed and touched by the old lady’s determination to work despite her age. My article received the most likes at 28,000 for the month of April on Instagram.

  • 9. One of the best articles that I have written was about an old 84-year-old grandmother who still persisted to continue working in a restaurant peeling onions. Many readers were impressed and touched by the old lady’s determination to work despite her age. My article received the most likes at 28,000 for the month of April on Instagram. 2.1.4 Conclusion In some days, I was not able to fulfil the requirement of 3 articles a day, because it was hard to find sources. But nevertheless, I still tried my best to write as much articles as I possibly can. With the help of all the full timer writers and other editorial interns, we were able to achieve our target article numbers in a day. I was faced with challenges such as people asking me to take down articles, and also people giving me falsified information. All these served as a lesson for me, new rules were made by my editor and through that, things began to run more smoothly.
  • 10. 2.2 Press Meet at Sime Darby Ara Damansara (Task 2) 2.2.1 Description This was my first press meet experience, and my supervisor Miss Vhysh wanted me to go on the field and attend a Sime Darby launch at Ara Damansara Motors. The event was attended by many journalists from different publications, and we were all given a special QR code to enter the event since it was held during the CMCO last April. I was accompanied by one of the brand representatives at WOB Mr Luke. The event was to launch their new Sime Darby Motors Centre and they gave us a tour of all 6 of their showrooms such as Ford, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Porshe and Jaguar Land Rover. The event lasted from 9am to 12.40pm. 2.2.2 Roles/Responsibilities My role as an editorial intern was to collect the press kit during the beginning of the event and also listen to the speeches. I was also required to take down notes and snap photos during the event for it to be included into the article later on. Although there were no deadlines, I decided to hand over the press kit to my colleague on the same day (April 12) for immediate publication.
  • 11. 2.2.3 Achievement of Task/Project The project goal was to give me the experience of how journalists attended press meets. After the event ended, I handed a scanned copy of the press kit over to another colleague of mine who was in charge of publishing the article. I sent her all the photos that I took and also other relevant notes. The event was attended by many journalists from different publications which made me expand my network with many media related people. I spoke and exchanged contacts with 2 journalists from a Malay publication called Sinar Harian and also BERNAMA. 2.2.4 Conclusion The project did achieve the project goal, which was to give me the experience of how journalists attended press meets. Fortunately, no challenges were faced, just pleasant and new experiences.
  • 12. 2.3 Article for a client (Task 3) 2.3.1 Description I was asked to write a client-based article by Miss Vhysh during the 10th week of my internship. The client was the founder of a called Constant Meals. I was tasked to reach out to the client and gather as much info as I could about the start-up company for the article. The company then sent me 5 meals from their menu for me to do a taste test and review it on my article but I was also advised by my advisor to preferably give good reviews and comments. The goal of the task was to highlight the fact that Constant Meals helps individuals to be consistent with a healthier lifestyle, all while having access to a variety of foods that taste exceptional. 2.3.2 Roles/Responsibilities My role for this task was to follow exactly what the client’s company focuses on and try to put in all the necessary and appropriate facts into the article. The client’s backstory was one of the elements that I included into the article as well because that reflected how the company was even started in the first place. Five meals from Constant Meals were sent to my home on Saturday June 7th . There was no deadline as to when the article had to be completed, but I decided to complete it before Monday. 2.3.3 Achievement of Task/Project I managed to write up an article according to the clients needs. All pictures that were included were taken by myself and I also managed to capture the importance of healthy eating inside my article. My reviewing skills has improved as well, I tried to get most of my inspiration from article segments at World of Buzz called WOB Eats. WOB Eats is where writers taste test food items from brands that want an article written on World of Buzz.
  • 13. 2.3.4 Conclusion The task managed to fulfil the brands goals, which were to highlight that Constant Meals helps individuals to be consistent with a healthier lifestyle, all while having access to a variety of foods that taste exceptional. The client was slightly rude to me when he found out I ate 2 meals on the same day although I did not seem to find any sort of problem in that. That was a small challenge that I managed to overcome by answering to the client in a polite and professional manner. PART 3: Training Analysis 3.1 Skills and Knowledge Gained At World of Buzz, I have learned to enhance mainly my communication skills, professional behaviour, and computer skills. There was a lot of over the phone conversations with potential clients, witnesses and people in general that I had to speak with in order to get information, details regarding a particular incident or statement. This helped me to build my confidence and also professional behaviour in the working industry for I had to speak politely and also listen attentively. Although the company was closed since the MCO was being implemented and workers had to work from home, I still regularly communicated with my colleagues through Slack (a platform for office related work). I connected with each of them closely and also observed how they worked and managed things. Slowly following and working my way up. There was not any presenting that I had to do, but we did have team meetings every consecutive week to discuss on the monthly KPI’s and rules and regulations. I also learned how to handle WordPress really well and I have noticed that it was very different from the usual WordPress account people owned. There was a lot of things that I had to learn and get used to, for example we had to check if our article had a featured image, if we had included tags, and wrote the article in the proper format. All these were mandatory to be checked once the article was completed, the step-by-step instruction was given to us and was called the editorial starter pack. 3.2 Application of University Subject Knowledge During twelve weeks of internship, I have accumulated various experiences and wider new knowledge through activities and tasks had been assigned to me. My beloved supervisor, Vhyshnawi had encouraged me to do a diversified range of tasks across the department. In this section, I am going to relate my experience with courses that I have taken in MMU especially Strategic Communication core courses. Some of the courses that I found most applicable in my workplace were, such as English for academic purposes, Fundamentals of Grammar, Effective Writing, and Professional Image and Etiquette. Mostly,
  • 14. the writing-based subjects were most applicable to me since I wrote articles most of the time. Back when I was taking up the subject Effective Writing, I learned the importance of including ethos, pathos and logos in my writing. This helped me significantly in my article write-ups because most of the time I wrote news that has to either appeal to an audience's emotions in order to evoke feelings. For example, news articles such as people in need seeking for donations from the public, using pathos is an effective technique to use in writing since emotions are powerful motivators and they grab people's attention, making them want to act. Fundamentals of Grammar and English for academic purposes were some of the subjects that thought me that good grammar is key to effective communication. I learned how to provide information that helps the reader's comprehension. My good use of grammar in my articles showed that I was diligent and have an eye for detail. Professional Image and Etiquette was a very vital subject that I have taken up quite recently, I learned that professional image speaks volumes about myself and it will help me develop and establish a good reputation in all business situations. My reputation was extremely important to me while I was working with WOB, hence I threaded carefully and made sure I maintained good and appropriate manners with my superiors. I look forward to taking up Media Law on my final semester because that subject was taken by my older sister and according to her it teaches laws that regulate the acclivities of the media. Such laws like laws of defamation, sedition, copyright, plagiarism, privacy. All these were very much profound during the course of my training and I look forward to learn more about it. 3.3 Suitability of Placement I applied and choose this placement because I am a passionate writer and journalism has always been my first career choice option. Although I did not go under the sun covering news like real journalists, I discovered that we still had the opportunity to share real and authentic news with other fellow Malaysians who equally enjoyed our stories as much as we did writing them. Some of the reasons as to why my placement was suitable are such as follows: • Challenging and relevant for an internship student: My internship position was an opportunity that stepped up from what I would do as a normal intern. There was a lot of learning involved. My editorial placement was linked to my study and my long-term career goals. • Engaging and motivating: I had a good understanding of what I can gain out of my placement and be motivated by the challenge.
  • 15. • Real opportunities provided by the employer: I was treated as an employee of the organization and not as a student at a university. I was fully integrated into the workforce and given all the opportunities and support that any other staff member would have. • Carefully monitored and reflected upon: My welfare as an intern was ensured and the expectations of all parties were met. My reflection during the end of my placement was seen as very important in building a quality experience overall for the company. This editorial and content creating placement is very much suitable for a Strategic communication student like myself but I also would like to explore more into the fields of Public Relations or copywriting as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend this training to others in my programme. 3.4 SWOT Analysis Strengths •I have a way with words and investigative skills •I am thorough and I pay attention to every detail •I report news and social stories very well •This job has helped me augment my writing techniques, and hone my ability to analyze data •Bringing a positive change in the society is my biggest achievement •Persistancy and dicipline are some of the good personal qualities I possess Weaknesses •Accepting criticism is what im bad in •Remember the benefit of getting a feedback. •My diction is good but my spelling skills may be flawed at times. •Heavy news that required time to get approval from many people. •lack of courage Opportunities •I see the need for strong public media •Enthusiasm and confidence •Make sure my ideas are good and write honestly. All while maintaining my writing flare. •I am very marketable • Besides writing, i can work in editing, marketing and public relations. Threats •FULL-TIME writers who are more experienced and have more sources to articles •Certain people who may disagree to my article. •Technology is also creating a need for writers and editors who are able and willing to adapt to changes in the industry. SWOT Internal External Positive Negative
  • 16. PART 4: Conclusion After the course of my internship, there was an exit interview held via google meet. My supervisor Miss Vhysh asked me several questions about weather the company had any limitations that they could improve on. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my internship experience and would want to venture into news reporting, or maybe copywriting as well in the future. Creating content for news organisations is can be challenging in a world where journalists may face intimidation for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression. But this job is intriguing to me and I will continue working my may towards what I am passionate about. What I mostly love about World of Buzz is how the co-founders treat their workers. We are treated like family and although we keep things professional at work, all the co-workers get along really well. Michelle (the co-founder of WOB) tries to include interns in the video contents that they create for audiences. I was fortunate enough to be a part of that and I appreciate the positive work environment I have trained in.
