The Impact It Has On Traditional Press
Tapping Into Online Networks
 News today is increasingly a shared, social experience.
 ½ of Americans say they rely on the people around them
to find out at least some of the news they need to know.

 While most original reporting still comes
 from traditional journalists, technology
makes it increasingly possible for the
actions of citizens to influence a story’s
 total impact.

Gaining Social Traction
 Information that gains traction in social
media differ substantially from those that
  lead in the mainstream press.
 In a 29 week span three social platforms,
blogs, Twitter and YouTube shared the
  same top story just once.

Of the three social media
platforms studied, news-
oriented blogs share the
most similarities with the
mainstream press.

Evolving Into The Future
As social media sites and tools evolve, so
too will their impact on news information
and citizens’ relationship to the news. The
interplay among new and traditional media
will also almost certainly evolve. Even
now, new partnerships and content sharing
are being developed across platforms and
outlets.
