A 54-year-old Indiana woman died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident during a charity ride. Several others were hospitalized, with two in intensive care. The accident involved multiple motorcycles but the cause is unknown. Some participants left the scene before emergency services arrived, which could jeopardize their ability to recover damages through legal action by damaging the solidity of their injury claims. Leaving the scene makes it difficult to prove the seriousness of injuries and that the accident incapacitated victims.

A Lawrenceburg woman died Monday after a multiple motorcycle
accident that took place Saturday morning. Kathleen Owen, 54, was
participating in a charity ride in Morgan Township when the accident
occurred. To date, investigators have not established what went wrong.
They have yet to determine how many motorcycles were even
involved.
Charity Event Goes Awry
Owen and five others were transported to the University of Cincinnati
Medical Center. As of the following Monday, two victims were still in
intensive care. One had been upgraded to stable condition, while
another was released. Owen died from her injuries. Besides these
individuals, reports say a number of participants – potentially injured –
left the scene before emergency services and police arrived.
Good Intentions Go South
The event was sponsored by the Southern Ohio Bikers, a non-profit
organization that supports charities through their events. Saturday’s
event was on behalf of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. An
organizer and participant in the event did report he was at the head of
the motorcycle run while the accident took place in the rear, so he had
no specific details about what transpired.

The Impact of Motorcycle Accidents
In the state of Indiana, motorcyclists are not required to follow the
stringent guidelines for protection required in other states. So when in
an accident, there is greater risk of broken bones and other serious
injury.
If you are injured in a motorcycle accident, treatment can easily go into
the tens of thousands of dollars. There are obvious signs of broken
bone, including exposed bone and abnormally angled or positioned
limbs. But it is not unusual for victims to ignore pain from pressure or
movement, and numbness or discoloration. They often assume
deformed joints and limbs will eventually correct themselves.
In time, you could lose wages while medical bills pile high. It is not
uncommon for there to be complications after suffering a broken bone.
They can lead to disfigurement, arthritis, compartment syndromes,
bone infection, nerve damage and the risk of osteoarthritis.

The people who left the scene have done themselves a disservice. Not
only have they denied themselves adequate treatment, they have also
jeopardized their right to recover medical expenses, income loss and
damages for pain and suffering.
Indiana law gives victims of motorcycle accidents a legal right to
retrieve compensation from responsible parties, especially in the case of
negligence or disregard for public safety. Unfortunately, the opportunity
to take legal action must be done in a timely and appropriate fashion.
That includes proving injury through immediate treatment, discussing
the matter with an injury lawyer and getting the legal process started.
Actions such as leaving the scene can damage the solidity of a claim.
They have diminished their chances of convincing legal authorities of the
seriousness of their injuries. They have made it difficult for legal
representation to prove the motorcycle accident incapacitated them.
A motorcycle accident lawyer needs to confirm the even the possibility
of a later medical condition. They can then use their talents and
experience to deal with negligent parties and insurance companies, both
of whom will use everything at their disposal to diminish your pain and
suffering. And there is no better argument than you were well enough
to leave the scene. It doesn’t negate the victim’s rights or the actions of
the responsible, but it puts the injury attorney at a disadvantage for
building the best defense.
