Gartner: Seven Building Blocks of Master Data Management
1. The Seven Building Blocks of MDM: A Framework for Success MDM Metrics MDM Technology Infrastructure MDM Processes MDM Governance MDM Organization MDM Strategy A Business-Driven, Holistic Approach to MDM MDM Vision

Key Issue: How will organizations create an MDM vision and strategy that enables the business vision and strategy? Strategic Imperative: Organizations should use a business-driven, holistic approach to MDM to achieve business stakeholder buy-in, appropriate focus on nontechnical challenges, such as governance, and measurable business value. Organizations need capabilities in the following seven areas for successful, long-term MDM. Vision: There must be a business vision that requires MDM as a key enabler. Stakeholders must understand and buy into the MDM vision. Strategy: The MDM strategy is all about how to achieve the vision. The MDM road map is part of this, but it's only the implementation plan. Metrics: A hierarchy of metrics is needed to build a strong business case, and a measurement regime will be necessary to report on status. Governance: Without effective governance, an MDM initiative will run into roadblocks due to internal politics and data ownership issues. An effective MDM governance structure must be created at an early stage. Organization: Individuals and groups will vary in their responsibilities for authoring, managing and consuming master data. Change management will be challenges and must be planned and resourced appropriately. Processes: The processes for creating, validating and sharing the master data must be understood and optimized. In addition, there must be a focus on ongoing information quality management processes, whereby master data is routinely profiled to determine its quality, and corrective action is taken. Technology infrastructure: Decisions must be made. What technology is necessary to enable the MDM vision? Should you buy or build that technology? If you decide to buy, is that technology available today and fully proven in all required use cases, in a single product? Or is the situation more complicated? Action Item: Leverage Gartner's Seven Building Blocks of MDM framework to achieve success with MDM.
