Statement of Need
The need statement is where you answer the WHY question, as in “Why is your project necessary?”
Here are the key components to include in the statement of need:
Description: The heart of your statement is a brief description of the need of those you serve. What is the issue your community is facing?
Geography: Details on the community or region served by your project. This is especially important for the many funders who give grants according to specific geographic criteria.
Population: You’ll describe the population served by your project in terms of a variety of demographic factors including: age, race or ethnicity, gender, LGBT, economic status, or any combination of these and other factors.
Facts: You want to support your argument with any or all of the following--remember it’s not a problem just because you say it is!
Specific, up-to-date statistics from trusted sources
Real-life stories of the people affected
Quotes/citations from respected sources in your field or from community members

The Project Description
The story of your program
The project description is the main narrative about your project and how it will accomplish your goals. You are telling a story about what will happen when you apply your expertise to the need you’ve identified in your community. Like chapters in a book, the solution you present here flows from the statement of need.
