Chris Rowan has been working as a Network Engineer at Brownsville ISD since 1997, where he is responsible for configuring and maintaining the district’s switches, routers, firewalls, wireless LAN controllers, voice gateways and anything else network-related. Prior to joining Brownsville’s Technology Department, Chris taught 5th and 6th grade for 10 years.
3.1 Gbps access to the Internet
Limited Network Visibility – have a FortiGate appliance for web filtering, but couldn’t provide the complete picture
Managing BYOD Explosion – needed a way to get a handle on the 54,000+ wireless devices
Internet Bandwidth – determined we were never going to have enough bandwidth - we needed a way to conserve bandwidth and see who was doing what and how often
FortiGate has some traffic shaping capabilities built in, but couldn’t provide us with enough information.
Solution Requirements: Needed to invest in a solution that could grow with us – an appliance that could handle the traffic load today, tomorrow and beyond (preparing for growing BYOD explosion)
Visibility and Control – a solution that lets us conserve bandwidth and shows us who is doing what, when and how often
Needed a reliable solution – we have a large, complex network and any new solutions must integrate with our current infrastructure
Brownsville first learned about Exinda through the district’s technology partner, Microshare
Louis Droll, Key Accounts Rep first brought Exinda to the district’s attention
Recommended an Exinda 8762 to help support district’s future growth and helped deploy the solution
Real time monitoring helped Chris and the staff at Brownsville confirm what was going on in the network
Helped discover outbound IPsec and file sharing that consumed large amounts of bandwidth
Instructional streaming from YouTube, etc is mission-critical. Before Exinda, streaming used to be first come, first served. Now everyone can watch and the user experience has greatly improved
Used to get complaints from teachers and lab managers that students were using Chrome extensions and Anonymous Proxies to bypass the web filter
