2. Disclaimer
Nerds are unique. Nerds are diverse. This set is for
all types of nerds (and also for everyone else).
Questions are on science fiction and fantasy,
comics, video games, TV shows, and movies.
While we have named our quiz THE NERD
STEREOTYPE, we are also poking fun at the
stereotype. So the questions are general-ish (on
said topics) in most cases. Keep that in mind.
4. Format
24 questions. Multiples of 4 are starred. Stars are
already marked on your answer sheet.
For starred questions with 2 parts, you need to
answer both parts to get the star. Half points, if
any, are QM’s discretion. Half stars don’t exist.
For questions with 3 parts, 2 correct parts for half
a point.

question of escape. It was also a question of transformation.” The
truth was that, as a kid, Sammy had only a casual interest, at best,
in X and his legendary feats; his great heroes were Nikola Tesla,
Louis Pasteur, and Jack London. [...] His dreams had always been
Xesque: they were the dreams of a pupa struggling in its blind

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. it is inspired by the life and

idea is that Y is dreaming in the last few hours of his life
and the player joins him on quests, battles, and magical
adventures with a band of characters in a fantasy world. It
even features him as a playable character. Many of his
compositions are featured in the game, and the

“Killswitch” is a very strange entry in the history of video game
legends. It is the story of a woman who wakes up mysteriously
injured at the bottom of a coal mine who must fight her way
through demons, specters, undead miners and possessed
machinery to make it out alive. It gave you the choice to play as
Porto, the girl, or Ghast, an invisible demon whose gameplay was
nearly impossible due to most of the challenges requiring you to be
able to see where your character was. There are highly detailed
accounts of everything from gameplay to plot, to specific puzzles,
graphics style, soundtrack and everything in between. The game
could not be copied, and reportedly only around 5,000 copies were
ever created.

would supposedly erase itself from the user’s

Nick Bostrom, a philosopher of artificial intelligence and
consciousness (widely known for his views about whether or not
we live in a simulation), has recently defined the term X, which is
fairly popular in futuristic sci-fi as well, with the following words:
"The term X has been used in very different senses by different
authors. I am sympathetic to the view that the word often causes
more confusion than clarity, and that we might be better off
replacing it with some alternative vocabulary. However, for the
purposes of this paper, I shall define a X as a being that has at least
one X capacity. By a X capacity, I mean a general central capacity
greatly exceeding the maximum attainable by any current human
being without recourse to new technological means.“

The return of X is one of important aspects of their legend, no
matter how and where it is adapted.
It has proven to be attractive to a number of modern writers from
John Masefield to C. S. Lewis along with crossing over with great
success to mediums like comics with instances ranging from
returning in the far dystopian future to save the planet from an
alien invasion in one to restoring a monarchy as it is about to be
abolished in another.
This has also occasionally turned them into a politically potent
figure through to the present era. In the 20th century, a
comparison of John F. Kennedy and his White House with X’s
context, made by Kennedy's widow, helped consolidate Kennedy's
posthumous reputation, with Kennedy even becoming associated
with an X-like messianic return in American folklore.

Forrest Gump was one of the '90s biggest – and most critically
lauded – hits. And while the ending doesn't exactly scream
sequel, there was still potential there. Winston Groom – the
author of the original novel – certainly thought so. He penned
a novel, Gump & Co, that would act as both a sequel to his
book and the movie. It saw Tom Hanks' loveable savant
stumble through the '80s and '90s, helping to bring down the
Berlin Wall and fighting in Iraq along the way. Both Hanks and
the original director, Robert Zemeckis (yes, him again) were

69. How did the game reboot itself?
In 1989, the world was introduced to a little (and at the time a really
tough) game on the Apple II called X. Created by Jordan Mechner, the
game used rotoscoping (that is, taking a source material and tracing
over it) to create realistic animations, and followed the titular
character`s efforts to save an unnamed Princess. It has had many
sequels and iterations across platforms.
Yet the most game-changing (pun intended) and notable of these was
the one released in 2003, with a completely new story in a completely
new environment with completely new characters with completely
new gameplay. It retained the core features of platforming and
combat as the central focus but added one iconic gameplay mechanic
that forever changed how one could play, fail, or correct themselves in
the game.

The Last Sherlock Holmes Story is a 1978 Sherlock Holmes
pastiche novel by Michael Dibdin.
The book is similar to other similar efforts insofar as it to
appears to pit the titular detective against the infamously

One of Holmes startling revelations here is that the Ripper is

However this was not the twist in this story that eventually

Lost in Space (1965-1968) is an American science fiction
television series created and produced by Irwin Allen. It follows
the adventures of a pioneering family of space colonists who
struggle to survive in a strange and often hostile universe after
their ship is sabotaged and thrown off course. It has had quite a
history of revivals - with a reboot film in 1994 and a successful
2018 Netflix series after some failed attempts.
However, initially the series was to be named something else in
reference to and as a futuristic update of another famous
literary family that also found itself lost. This was scrapped
when a comic book with the same name and central conceit was
found to be existing already.

73. This isn't technically about the movies. Give me X.
Despite several attempts and rumours over the decades, the
popular movie ‘X’ never really got a sequel, although it does
have the distinction of popular perception of a continuation
in the form of a game. However, ‘X II’ for the Nintendo
Entertainment System (NES) was not based on a movie
sequel at all. Instead, it was simply a direct sequel to a game
based on the movie that was never officially released in the
U.S. other than as an arcade port.
There’s not even really a story to speak of, other than you
play as one Mikey saving the rest of the team who have been
captured by the Fratellis. You also rescue a mermaid, if that
interests you.

"I turned in the script the night before 9/11. And
we sat down, Tom [Hanks] and Bob [Zemeckis] and
I, looked at each other and said, we don't think this
is relevant anymore. The world had changed. Now
time has obviously passed, but maybe some things
should just be one thing and left as they are."

It retained the core features of platforming and
combat as the central focus but added one iconic gameplay mechanic
that forever changed how one could play, fail, or correct themselves in
the game.

X: The Guardian Code is a CGI/Live-Action reimagining of the
groundbreaking 90s animated series X. Initially meant to be a more
traditional and fully-CGI continuation about the lives of "little
computer people" (who literally live inside a computer), it turned out
to be a lot more.
In a hidden lab in the basement of Alan Turing High, an artificial
intelligence named VERA watches over cyberspace. When its stability
and security is threatened by a deranged hacker known only as "The
Sourcerer", VERA recruits four teenagers to travel into the digital
world and stop him. These five must balance their personal lives with
saving cyberspace from his viral army, including the dangerous virus
villain known as MegaByte who has been resurrected to ravage the
Net once more.

The Last Sherlock Holmes Story is a 1978 Sherlock Holmes
pastiche novel by Michael Dibdin.
The book is similar to other similar efforts insofar as it to
appears to pit the titular detective against the infamously
unknown murderer. But that is where similarities end.
One of Holmes startling revelations here is that the Ripper is
none other than his nemesis Moriarty himself.
However this was not the twist in this story that eventually
shocked (and even enraged) many of its readers.

You also rescue a mermaid, if that
interests you.

the intent and the pitch to put out a similar treatment

157. 1.
The premise of the sci-fi adventure/disaster movie X is absurd, and yet it
was one of the blockbuster hits of the late 90s. The large ensemble cast
that included Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson and Steve Buscemi certainly
contributed where the story failed, as did its director's penchant for big,
showy scenes filled with explosions. Urban legend has it that the movie
was so riddled with plot holes that NASA apparently shows this film to its
new managerial recruits, trying to get them to spot as many errors as
possible.
On the other hand, another movie, Y, with an extremely similar premise,
had released only one and a half months previous to X and had a much
quieter run at the box office, ironically in direct opposition to its name. Y
features, among others, Elijah Wood and Vanessa Redgrave, and is
generally held to be much more scientifically accurate. The director of Y is
known for her work on the TV show ER, in which she pioneered the
typical high-energy walk-and-talk scenes seen in later medical dramas
such as Grey's Anatomy. Name X and Y, as well as the directors of X and Y.

The inspiration for the film X (English title), according to the director,
came from Persian miniatures or Armenian illuminated miniatures. He
added that he “wanted to create that inner dynamic that comes from
inside the picture, the forms and the dramaturgy of colour.” As a result,
the movie, which has been described as a series of moving tableaux that
aims at a poetic interpretation of its subject’s life, became nearly
incomprehensible to viewers who watched it without context, although
now it is often considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. The
subject of the movie is a poet. Famous images from the movie include the
bursting of ripe fruits to make a red stain in the shape of the poet’s home
kingdom; the poet as a youth standing holding a white rose and a candle;
and dyers at work dying wool in the colours of the flags of the poet’s
country.
The movie is also noted for featuring actress Sofiko Chiaureli in multiple
roles, both male and female.

The movie, Inglourious Basterds was inspired by the
1978 Italian film X (the English title), whose original
Italian title literally translates to “That Damned
Armoured Train”. X, in turn, was a remake of Y, a 1967
American war film. Inglourious Basterds features a film
within itself, Stolz der Nation, reportedly made in
1944. This film features a famous sound effect heard in
numerous movies across the world, but unfortunately
its use is anachronistic as the sound effect had not
been recorded or used until the 1953 war film, The

abducting and murdering four young girls from August

child pornography, and slasher films. This led to the
media dubbing him “The _____ Murderer.” His widely
publicized trial led to a moral panic against the _____,
and according to Fumiya Ichihashi, the police played

169. X is a yogi, husband and father. This character
portrayed by Wong Wing-sang in the movie Master
of the Flying Guillotine (1976) is supposedly the
inspiration behind the stereotypical portrayal of X.
Named after a random item taken from the menu
of an Indian eating joint in Osaka, X was described
by Sam Means in A Practical Guide to Racism as
the perfect example of the stereotypical Hindu –
“nonviolent, magical, fastidious, stretchy, and
pugnacious.” Identify X. [Picture next slide]

172. Despite what a 2012 Akshay Kumar-starrer would
have you believe, the first known occurrence of X
in 1976 in the UK was a prank influenced by the
1974 British film, Phase IV. In the movie, X is
created by a colony of super-intelligent ants, an
explanation far removed from its apparent
paranormal suggestions popularized today through
such shows as The X-Files. What is X, the
inexplicable occurrence of which fuels conspiracy
theorists worldwide?

184. X is a character and Y is a series. Identify both. [5+5]
When X got the Y, he stopped caring about girls.
A lot of fan theories exist as to why X stopped caring
about girls, the craziest of which states that when you
reverse X’s surname, it says he’s a homosexual.
The creator(s) never explicitly mentioned X being a
homosexual. He was just too busy with Y to care about
women. However, X did have a “girlfriend” for the
greater part of Y but did not show any sexual interest
in her.

186. X, the titular character of a TV show, was a member of the Nerd
Herd (the technical support division) of the place he worked at. It
all started with X’s former best friend sending him an encrypted e-
mail with classified government secrets, which he decrypted by
typing out “attack troll with nasty knife”. Back in college, X and his
best friend programmed their own version of Y.
Y is one of the earliest interactive fiction computer games, with
roots drawn from the original genre game Colossal Cave Adventure.
The first version of Y was written between 1977 and 1979 and
it distinguished itself in its genre as an especially rich game, in
terms of both the quality of the storytelling and the sophistication
of its text parser.
Identify X (the character or the TV show) and Y (the video game).

Y raps:
Why don't you freaking exile yourself
on your little island and hide?
'Cause this is a rap rollercoaster. You're

Accords and then...
Y = Black Mariah
Z = Luke Cage
193. X didn’t create the Y out of thin air in the season
2 opener, which was the first time we saw X
among his people on his planet. Y was borrowed
from something he witnessed as a child while
attending a service at an Orthodox Jewish
synagogue with his family.
The Y represents the Hebrew letter Shin, which
represents the word Shaddai, a name for God. It
looks like a lot of people have been blessing each
other without knowing it.

194. "Five or six guys get up on the bimah, the stage, facing the
congregation," X told the Yiddish Book Center in 2014. "They
get their tallits over their heads, and they start this
chanting—I think it's called duchening—and my father said to
me, 'Don’t look.' So everyone’s got their eyes covered with
their hands or they've got their tallit down over their faces ...
And I hear this strange sound coming from them. They’re not
singers, they were shouters. And dissonant. It was all
discordant … it was chilling. I thought, 'Whoa, something
major is happening here.' So I peeked. And I saw them with
their hands stuck out from beneath the tallit like this […]
towards the congregation. Wow. Something really got hold of
me. I had no idea what was going on, but the sound of it and
the look of it was magical.”
