Carvings in wood have been prevalent for many years, and
can be used for the identification and dating of older pieces.

carving, relief carving, fretwork, and sculptural wood carving.
Chip carving is a simple and traditional technique that is done
using a short-bladed knife to cut intricate designs and
patterns through a series of triangular incisions. Relief
carving is used for a wide variety of projects, and it can be in
the style of high relief, with deep cuts creating a pattern or
design, or low relief, which involves shallower cuts.
