Corruption
Eruption
Starting with the Anthem
Corruption is a term with many
meanings, but generally it entails misusing
one’s office for a private gain or unofficial
end. It involves both a monetary and non-
monetary benefit.
• Abuse of the
system
• Bid rigging
• Bribery
• Cartel
• Collusion
• Cronyism
• Electoral fraud
• Embezzlement
• Influence peddling
• Nepotism
• Organized crime
• Patronage
• Price Fixing
Throughout The Life
at the time of birth….
In Government Hospitals, corruption is associated with non availability of
medicines, getting admission, consultations with doctors and availing
diagnostic services.
Corruption at School Level….
“School corruption takes many forms, but it falls into three main categories:
I: cheating and deceit, II: waste and mismanagement, and III: fraud and
stealing.”
Corruption in Police
Police corruption is a specific form of police misconduct designed to obtain
financial benefits, other personal gain, or career advancement for a police officer
or officers in exchange for not pursuing, or selectively pursuing, an investigation or
arrest.
Political corruption is the abuse of public power, office, or resources by elected
government officials for personal gain, e.g. by extortion, soliciting or offering bribes
Is India really fighting against
corruption with Anna Hazare?
What are the roots of India’s
fight against ‘Corruption’?
• 2G spectrum scam resulting into a loss to
the exchequer and illegal manipulation of
the spectrum allocation process.
• Wikileaks of the US embassy secret cables.
• 2010 fake housing loan scam.
• Adarsh Housing Society (Mumbai) Scam.
• 2010 Commonwealth Games Corruption
Controversy.
Anna Hazare’s Protest for Jan Lokpal Bill
On 5 April 2011, Anna Hazare initiated a
movement by beginning fast unto death at
Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.
Movement gained momentum with support of
India’s youth.
Protests erupted in
Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and
many other places.
On the morning of 16 August
2011, Hazare, along with close associates, was
remanded to judicial custody for seven days.
Hazare was picked up by police at about 7.30
am from a residence in east Delhi for "intending
to defy prohibitory orders"
Protests spread to numerous other places, including Mumbai, Kolkata,
Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Patna, Bhopal, Ahmedabad,
Ranchi, Pune, and the University of Jammu
The first meeting regarding a draft of the Lokpal Bill was held on
16 April.
Swami Ramdev begins his indefinite hunger strike at Ramlila
Maidan in Delhi
Anna Hazare was detained by Delhi Police in the early morning before
he could start his hunger strike at JP park, Delhi.
Anna Hazare was sent to seven days judicial custody to Tihar jail
after refusing to sign a personal bond to be released on bail.
Anna Hazare agreed to leave jail after Delhi Police granted him permission to fast for
15-days against corruption at Ramlila Maidan.
• In India, the Jan Lokpal Bill is a draft anti-corruption bill that would create
an independent body.
• It would have the power to prosecute bureaucrats
• The bill was drafted by former IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, Shanti
Bhushan, Justice N. Santosh Hedge, Advocate Prashant Bhushan and
former chief election commisioner J.M. Lyngdoh .
• The first Lokpal Bill was passed in 1969 but failed to get through Rajya
Sabha for coming 42 years.
Keeping the features of proposed Jan Lokpal Bill in mind, can we really
“ensure” the continuation of anti-corruption machinery?
Can we “ensure” honest officials for keeping the committee clean and
genuinely helping common man?
What is India’s future with the Jan Lokpal Bill?
