The Bison-Neamț Nature Reservation was established in 1968 to protect bison. It is located in Neamț County and covers an area of around 5,000 hectares of deciduous forest. In 2013, the reservation contained 6 bison in a 4 hectare zoo area and another 19 adults and 3 calves in a 180 hectare acclimatization pen. 5 additional bison were released into the wild in March 2013 and another 8 are planned to be released in spring 2014. The reservation aims to create a genetically valuable bison population and avoid inbreeding by importing various specimens over time since its founding.
