ollywood expects a lot
from its leading ladies –
luscious locks, glamorous
outfits and bikini-ready
bodies. But a new breed
of young starlets are rewriting the rules
of A-list stardom – and it’s drawing
plenty of praise.
Shailene Woodley – star of the
upcoming Divergent trilogy – is heading
up a multimillion-dollar franchise,
following in the successful footsteps
of The Hunger Games actress Jennifer
Lawrence and Twilight star Kristen
Stewart. And like them, Shailene is
bucking Hollywood’s obsession with
impossibly perfect looks. “My whole
life I was so self-conscious about being
skinny,” says the 22-year-old. “And
just recently, I don’t care anymore. All
insecurities are projected because of
what you think others are saying about
you, but they don’t really matter at all.”
Shailene’s taking her cue from
outspoken J-Law, 23, who is famous
for her love of junk food and rejects the
idea of the perfect body. “Somebody
told me I was fat, that I was going to
get fired if I didn’t lose a certain amount
of weight,” she says. “They brought in
pictures of me where I was basically
naked and told me to use them as
motivation for my diet. If anybody
even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’,
I’m like, ‘You can go f*** yourself.’”
It’s an attitude that’s working for
her. After just two years in mainstream
Hollywood, Jen has banked an estimated
$25 million, nabbed a Best Actress
Oscar and earned herself the title of
America’s sweetheart.
When it comes to fashion, Jen prefers
to dress down, admitting that although
she’s the face of high-end fashion house
Dior, she planned to wear sweatpants
to the Academy Awards.

THE new
fame RULES
1. honesty: Tell it like it
is in interviews.
2. Body confidence:
Weight doesn’t matter.
3. Anti-glamour: Dress
down when off duty.
Young starlets are taking
Hollywood on their own terms
girl-next-door K-Stew to thank for
their fashion freedom. The 23-year-
old has always dictated her own dress
code on the red carpet, often opting
for sneakers instead of stilettos.
“I just don’t like teetering over all
those young girls,” she says. “I want
to be able to run around and talk to
them. I acknowledge the heels look
better, but that’s OK.”
And unlike the guarded approach
of stars before them, all three
actresses have won over fans by
giving honest interviews where
nothing is off limits – even bodily
functions! “As soon as somebody
farts around me, I think it’s
hilarious!” says Jen. “You cup it,
and then you throw it in someone’s
face and say, ‘Take a bite out of
that cheeseburger!’”
Made even more endearing
because of her candid public
persona, the actress won over the
world with humour when she
stacked it on stage on her way
to accept her 2013 Best Actress
Oscar. “This is nuts,” she said, as
the crowd stood to applaud her.
“You guys are only standing up
because I fell and you feel bad.
That was embarrassing.”
For her part, Kristen is the
queen of the overshare, once
telling reporters that her lover
“loves to lick under my armpits”,
while Shailene has no problem
with medical tips, saying,
“I like to give my vagina
a little vitamin D.”
With their outspoken attitudes
and relaxed approaches to fame,
it’s no wonder these stars have
found fans all around the world
while making millions from
their film franchises. But
a major part of their appeal is
that they don’t actually care
what people think of them.
“It’s not a terrible thing if
you’re either loved or hated,”
Kristen says. “Honestly, I don’t
care, ’cause it doesn’t keep me
from doing my s***.”
