Mind the gap
Curvy Kate lashes out
Curvy and confident, Kate Upton
is leading the charge against the
new “thigh gap” trend
Kate shows off
her world-
famous body in

by Antonio
Berardi at the
Melbourne Cup
last week.
“Thinspiration” pics
are harming girls,
according to robyn.
K
ate Upton’s voluptuous looks are
celebrated the world over. Getting
her break as a Sports Illustrated
swimsuit model in 2011, she’s
become a proud poster-girl for
womanly curves. Now the 21-year-old is
calling out her critics, telling FAMOUS why
she won’t slim down – and her bold move
has industry peers following her lead.
Most recently? Aussie plus-size model Robyn
Lawley, 24, spoke out against the disturbing
“thigh gap” trend – which describes legs so thin
that they don’t touch
– after internet trolls
labelled the size-14
beauty “too hefty” and
a “pig” when her
photo appeared on
a Facebook page
promoting thigh gaps.
“I couldn’t care
less about needing a
supposed ‘thigh gap’,”
Robyn wrote in a blog
post for news site The
Daily Beast, which has
since made headlines
around the world.
“It’s just another tool
of manipulation that
other people are trying
to use to keep me
from loving my body.
Why would I want to
starve and weaken my
natural body size?...
After body bullies criticised her lack of a “thigh gap”, size-14 model
Robyn Lawley slammed the trend in a blog post for news site The
Daily Beast. “Women have enough pressure as it is,” she writes.
“The last thing I would want for my future daughter would be to
starve herself because she thought a thigh gap was necessary.”

Should there be

robyn’s
curves are
in demand.

I would have to change
my entire frame just to
achieve something that
seems so trivial.”
No stranger to cruel
body criticism, Kate is
on Team Robyn. The
US-born model – who
was in Australia last
week for the 2013
Emirates Melbourne
Cup as a guest of the
Victoria Racing Club
and Emirates – tells
FAMOUS, “I love my
curves and I’m very confident with who I am.”
That confidence was famously put to the test
last year when a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
casting agent publicly compared her to a “footballer’s
wife”, declaring she would “never” be up to the
world-famous lingerie brand’s standards.
But a resilient Kate rose above it. “After I realised
I wasn’t Victoria’s Secret’s favourite model, I had
more room to expand in a direction that a model
with a [curvy] body hadn’t in a really long time,” she
reveals. “It didn’t really get me down. It changed my
direction of where I wanted to go next.”
Since then, she’s fronted US, UK, Italian and
Brazilian Vogue – as well as earning back-to-back
covers of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Next, she’s
set to take on
the big screen
with a role in
romcom The
Other Woman,
which will see
her act alongside
Cameron Diaz,
41, and Leslie
Mann, also 41.
Says the humble
starlet, “I’m so
lucky I had them
[to work with].”
With all her
success, it’s no
wonder that Kate
– like Robyn –
refuses to change
to fit an unrealistic,
unattainable look.
“I choose to go
the route of [’80s]
supermodels like
Christie Brinkley
and Cindy
Crawford,” she
says. “They were
a huge inspiration.
I’m happy people
are embracing me
like I embraced them.”
But the cheeky
beauty admits that,
like most girls, there
is one time she does
feel insecure – “Once
a month!”
