TOPIC 1: WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TECH
Welcome to the Frontier Technology Hour, here on KNTR-AM! Thank you for joining us.
Along with me today is my regular guest on the Frontier Technology Hour, Nello Ruscitti,
who is General Manager for Frontier Communications right here in Lake Havasu.
June is here, and with it comes the Women’s World Cup soccer tournament, which started
this week in Canada.
This week also marks Apple’s worldwide Developers Conference, Apple’s annual gathering
of its top tech company suppliers and app developers. We explore Apple’s latest product
and service launches announced at the WWDC this week.
Finally, this month is also the time for gardeners and birders to enjoy their favorite
pastimes, so we’ll explore the latest garden and birding apps.
So tell us, Nello, what does technology have to do with the Women’s World Cup?
• Well, Roger, the United States national women’s soccer team played against Australia on
Monday in its quest to win the Women’s World Cup title. The US national team has not
had that title since 1999.
• FOX Sports has the English-language rights to US games, broadcasting their coverage
across several of their networks, highlighting 16 US games in all. No broadcast network
has ever televised 16 men’s or women’s World Cup matches in a single tournament.
• Also, 2015 marks the first time since 2003 that any Women’s World Cup matches are
scheduled for over-the-air broadcast in the US.
• FOX is also making the games digitally available through tablets and mobile devices by
using the FOX Sports GO app.
• FOX Sports is expected to provide almost 200 hours of coverage from the Women’s
World Cup, totaling between six and seven hours a day over the month-long tournament.
• ESPN lost out to FOX for the rights but still has coverage of the games. ESPN is treating
these games as a major event, bringing on board former US national team stars, such as
Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, and Kate Markgraf to give studio analysis.
• SportsCenter will also offer extensive pre- and post-match coverage reporting on the US
team.
• SiriusXM will simulcast FOX Sports’ live play-by-play for every tournament match
through the final on July 5th
.
• In addition, for the first time, there is a Women’s World Cup fantasy game. Mondogoal
launched the fantasy game for the 2015 Women’s World Cup and will award $10,000 in
a single fantasy contest.
• This fantasy game is the first-ever daily pay fantasy game for any women’s sport. The
contest will also offer the option for fans to combine players from the Women’s World
Cup with players in top men’s competitions that are going on at the same time, such as
Champions League Final, Major League Soccer, and Copa America.
• This contest is the first time team fantasy sports have ever had a co-ed option.
• In terms of how the contest will work, each day the fans will pick a team of 11 players
from the four games that are being played on that day using the Mondogoal salary cap
format, and then watch the Women’s World Cup to see players earn points for their
fantasy teams.
• Same as any pay fantasy game, the best compiled scores at the end of the day from a
series of statistics will win the top cash prizes.
• In terms of social media, Twitter Sports has reintroduced popular soccer hashtags, such
as #USA and #CAN.
• Any fan can stay on top of the latest news using social media by following Canada at
@CanadaSoccerEN, the US at @ussoccer_wnt and the official tournament at
@FIFAWWC.
• Getting involved in global conversations is easy using #FIFAWWC and #WWC2015.
• For the first time at a FIFA competition, screens will broadcast messages from
#myFIFAWWC (which allows fans to follow the tournament around the world) in-
stadium, therefore viewers at home may be able to spot out their messages on TV.
• Social media campaigns will be running throughout the tournament span, such as
#LiveYourGoals (which FIFA has encouraged both women and girls to achieve their
goals by using the hashtag) and the US women’s national team has run a campaign with
#SheBelieves. Both campaigns have interactions from the teams and the players.
Through social media, fans are able to feel an emotional connection with the teams and
the players, which is a powerful aspect that this generation is able to take advantage of.
• Yes, Roger, it’s amazing how powerful social media can be.
• In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if, over the course of the next couple of weeks, we hear of
social networks being overloaded, if not crashing temporarily, due to the enormous
demand.
TOPIC 2: APPLE DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE
As many of us know, Apple products are pretty much everywhere we go. In the technology-
driven society we live in, Apple loves to keep us up-to-date with the latest and greatest
products. The company not only does this by releasing new products every couple months,
but it also hosts a prestigious worldwide developers conference annually, giving a glimpse
into any big news the company has in store for the rest of us consumers.
Nello, what are some of the new major features and products that Apple discussed at the
conference?
• Well, Roger, Apple has certainly kept us on our toes with upcoming products and
software updates. The company introduced numerous new features to get excited about.
• Apple’s chief executive, Timothy Cook, introduced the latest version of Apple’s mobile
system, iOS 9. The system includes a better battery life and some improvements to Siri,
its intelligence personal assistant and knowledge navigator.
• Siri will now be able to respond to specific commands, such as “Show me photos from
January” to load the photo roll taken that month.
• All iOS devices dating back to the iPhone 4S will benefit from this new mobile system
when it officially launches this fall.
• The iPad will especially benefit from the iOS 9. For the first time, the software will allow
you to run more than one app at a time on the iPad’s display, for example, allowing you
to receive updates from Twitter while writing an email at the same time.
• This feature will be supported by the iPad 2 and any new iPad that Apple might release
this fall.
• Some other big news that Apple introduced is a new music service called Apple Music.
The service will be free for the first three months, and will cost $9.99 following the free
trial.
• After revolutionizing digital music with the release of the iPod and iTunes, Apple is now
trying to compete with a world full of subscription music offerings, such as Spotify and
Rhapsody.
• Apple Music will include a combination of music downloads, streaming radio and
streaming music into a single app, available June 30th
.
• Apple’s Vice President, Susan Prescott, also introduced ‘Apple News’ at the conference.
The new application will replace the Newsstand application on devices.
• Apple News will allow you to access content from publications throughout the world
through a feed of content and articles personalized by the Apple product user.
• The application will keep track of topics of interest for users and will allow them to
search for their favorite news sources.
• Many news sources have signed up for the launch of this application, such as BuzzFeed,
the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and others.
• Apple has worked on updating its existing apps as well. For example, the Maps
application will now support alternate routes of travel, such as bus, ferry, subway and
train transportation.
• This update will be very convenient for those that use a public transit system on a daily
basis.
• Last but certainly not least, Apple introduced its latest version of its Mac operating
software OS X El Capitan. Two big areas of change for the new OS system are focused
around experience and performance.
• The Safari web browser has been overhauled so that you can now pin sites in the tab bar
just by dragging them to the left. Another feature includes the address bar in Safari
becoming the location to find which tab audio is playing from.
• El Capitan also has new updates in the Spotlight search. It has been improved to allow
you to look up weather, stocks and game scores. It also has been updated to allow you to
look up queries in natural language, such as asking it to “find documents I worked on in
April.”
• With many other features improved as well, the El Capitan system will definitely make a
Mac user’s experience that much more enjoyable.
It sounds like Apple is in for quite a busy year ahead, Nello.
• It certainly does, Roger.
TOPIC 3: GARDENING AND BIRDING APPS
With all of the talk about Apple and its app developers, it’s an opportune time to talk
about some of the top mobile apps for the season.
Homeowners and gardeners everywhere have been spring-cleaning all season long. With
summer fast approaching, now is an ideal time to add some creative touches to your garden
and yard.
What apps are out there for gardeners and bird-watchers?
• Well Roger, there are numerous mobile apps are available to help plan and tend your
garden.
• Among them is Eden Garden Designer, an app that takes the guesswork out of how things
will look in full bloom.
• The $1.99 iPhone app lets you snap a picture of your yard and then add in a variety of
features, including flowers, bushes and trees. The app includes more than 40 plants,
which may not be enough for master gardeners, but should be a decent number for
average do-it-yourselfers.
• In addition, gardeners can also use a drag-and-drop feature to “tinker in the yard” without
getting any dirt under their nails. And seasonal settings can show you how your yard will
appear over the course of the year.
• For those interested in fruit-and-vegetable gardens, the Essential Garden Guide app is a
great place to start.
• The $1.99 app, which includes more than 30 vegetables and 10 fruits in its database, will
tell you everything you need to know about planting, tending and harvesting, including
how deep to put your seeds, how much sunlight each crop needs, and how much soil
acidity the plants will tolerate.
• A fairly simple app, Essential Garden Guide will help you cut down your grocery bill by
providing your favorite fruits and veggies all summer long.
• Another great app is Leafsnap.
• Developed by Columbia University, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian
Institution, this field guide can help gardeners and leaf-peepers alike identify the tree
species they’re looking at. With high-resolution, clear images of a tree’s particular leaf,
fruit, flower, and even bark, the app can help you better appreciate the plant life around
you.
• Perennial Match is an app that helps you create a garden with colorful appeal all season
long.
• It’s a bit more complicated than others, and at $4.99 a bit pricier, but the app can be an
excellent guide to ensure your flowers and bushes are compatible with each other. The
app allows you to set filters and plant your perennials according to height, spacing,
colors, season, and hardiness. The app also provides information on the types of birds,
insects and animals the plants might attract, making your garden a world all its own.
(Additional information can be found online at http://time.com/3819363/yard-green-apps/)
• Speaking of backyard birds, a number of apps are available for birdwatchers of all kinds,
from beginner to advanced.
• Non-birders or beginners might want to start with iBird, an easy-to-use, approachable app
that includes both photographs and illustrations.
• Intermediate and advanced birders who’ve relied on book-form field guides can find
those same guides online. Sibley, Peterson and National Geographic all offer their guides
in app form.
• The Sibley and National Geographic apps both feature up to 1,000 birds and provide
comprehensive, detailed illustrations.
• Birders who like to travel to add to their life list can use eBird’s BirdLog North America
or BirdsEye, both of which are affiliated with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
• The apps can track migrations and, at times, can even track specific “hotspot” locations,
telling you what people are seeing and where.
(More detailed information can be found online at
http://www.sctimes.com/story/life/outdoors/2014/03/29/bird-watching-experts-reveal-favorite-
apps/7017159/)
So whether you’re a gardener or a birder — or both — it sounds like now is a great time to
get out there and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer.
• Exactly, Roger. Get out and enjoy it now before the dog days of summer set in.

TOPIC 3: GARDENING AND BIRDING APPS With all of the talk about Apple and its app developers, it’s an opportune time to talk about some of the top mobile apps for the season. Homeowners and gardeners everywhere have been spring-cleaning all season long. With summer fast approaching, now is an ideal time to add some creative touches to your garden and yard. What apps are out there for gardeners and bird-watchers? • Well Roger, there are numerous mobile apps are available to help plan and tend your garden. • Among them is Eden Garden Designer, an app that takes the guesswork out of how things will look in full bloom. • The $1.99 iPhone app lets you snap a picture of your yard and then add in a variety of features, including flowers, bushes and trees. The app includes more than 40 plants, which may not be enough for master gardeners, but should be a decent number for average do-it-yourselfers.

And seasonal settings can show you how your yard will appear over the course of the year. • For those interested in fruit-and-vegetable gardens, the Essential Garden Guide app is a great place to start. • The $1.99 app, which includes more than 30 vegetables and 10 fruits in its database, will tell you everything you need to know about planting, tending and harvesting, including how deep to put your seeds, how much sunlight each crop needs, and how much soil acidity the plants will tolerate. • A fairly simple app, Essential Garden Guide will help you cut down your grocery bill by providing your favorite fruits and veggies all summer long. • Another great app is Leafsnap. • Developed by Columbia University, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institution, this field guide can help gardeners and leaf-peepers alike identify the tree species they’re looking at. With high-resolution, clear images of a tree’s particular leaf, fruit, flower, and even bark, the app can help you better appreciate the plant life around you. • Perennial Match is an app that helps you create a garden with colorful appeal all season long. • It’s a bit more complicated than others, and at $4.99 a bit pricier, but the app can be an excellent guide to ensure your flowers and bushes are compatible with each other. The app allows you to set filters and plant your perennials according to height, spacing,

(Additional information can be found online at http://time.com/3819363/yard-green-apps/) • Speaking of backyard birds, a number of apps are available for birdwatchers of all kinds, from beginner to advanced. • Non-birders or beginners might want to start with iBird, an easy-to-use, approachable app that includes both photographs and illustrations. • Intermediate and advanced birders who’ve relied on book-form field guides can find those same guides online. Sibley, Peterson and National Geographic all offer their guides in app form. • The Sibley and National Geographic apps both feature up to 1,000 birds and provide comprehensive, detailed illustrations. • Birders who like to travel to add to their life list can use eBird’s BirdLog North America or BirdsEye, both of which are affiliated with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. • The apps can track migrations and, at times, can even track specific “hotspot” locations, telling you what people are seeing and where. (More detailed information can be found online at http://www.sctimes.com/story/life/outdoors/2014/03/29/bird-watching-experts-reveal-favorite- apps/7017159/) So whether you’re a gardener or a birder — or both — it sounds like now is a great time to get out there and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer. • Exactly, Roger. Get out and enjoy it now before the dog days of summer set in.
