9 Events of Instruction
in VILT
Challenges with VILT

Instructors in virtual instructor-led training (VILT)
need to deal with a few drawbacks compared to physical
classrooms – including:
 Lack of visual cues
 Inability to moderate session based on learners’ reactions
 Lack of trust and rapport
 Inability to draw silent learners
Let’s see how Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction
can help address these concerns.
GAIN ATTENTION

Let learners introduce themselves by sharing
pictures (of their childhood, favorite
superhero, etc.)
Set up virtual lobbies 15 minutes prior to the
session where learners can meet and greet
each other.
Address learners by name during the session.
Use chat to share ground rules and set
expectations.

And to get them interested in the session, send trailer
videos 1-2 weeks before the training!

Use polls and micro quizzes to evaluate the
current knowledge of learners.
Ask open-ended questions that will get
them thinking:
 About what they already know
 How it connects with what’s to come

whiteboards for visual explanations.
Play short videos to:
 Demonstrate processes
 Explain abstract concepts

 Discuss and brainstorm

the instructor

Poll Everywhere) to deliver full-
fledged assessments in the session.
For small groups, learners can

resources that learners can refer after
the session.
Post recordings of the session on the LMS.
Provide contact details in case additional

  • 2. Challenges with VILT 2 Instructors in virtual instructor-led training (VILT) need to deal with a few drawbacks compared to physical classrooms – including:  Lack of visual cues  Inability to moderate session based on learners’ reactions  Lack of trust and rapport  Inability to draw silent learners Let’s see how Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction can help address these concerns.

Let learners introduce themselves by sharing pictures (of their childhood, favorite superhero, etc.) Set up virtual lobbies 15 minutes prior to the session where learners can meet and greet each other. Address learners by name during the session. Use chat to share ground rules and set expectations. 4 And to get them interested in the session, send trailer videos 1-2 weeks before the training!

  • 8. Use polls and micro quizzes to evaluate the current knowledge of learners. Ask open-ended questions that will get them thinking:  About what they already know  How it connects with what’s to come 8 Share articles, pictures, or facts related to the topic.
  • 10. Use slide decks to present information and whiteboards for visual explanations. Play short videos to:  Demonstrate processes  Explain abstract concepts 10 Use chat to answer questions and polls to check learners’ understanding.
  • 12. Use breakout rooms for learners to:  Discuss and brainstorm  Come back to the main room with questions for the instructor 12 Let participants use whiteboards or share their screens so that the instructor can guide and correct them.
  • 14. Use breakout rooms to let learners analyze case studies. Ask learners to share examples and non-examples. Pose ‘what-if’ scenarios. 14
  • 16. Instructors can:  Visit breakout rooms to encourage, correct, and guide  Discuss common questions or misconceptions for everyone’s benefit 16
  • 18. Ensure questions are aligned with learning objectives. Use polls to test learners. Use tools (eg: Breeze Presenter and Poll Everywhere) to deliver full- fledged assessments in the session. For small groups, learners can peer-review and share feedback. 18

  • 20. Offer job-aids and links to other resources that learners can refer after the session. Post recordings of the session on the LMS. Provide contact details in case additional help is needed. Share details of upcoming sessions they can register to. 20
