Three Tasks to Add to Your To-Do List
Before Outsourcing eLearning
Design and Development
A little pre-work by you before outsourcing eLearning will put you on the
right track and save a lot of time and efforts.
1. Set learning
objectives
2. Check available
content
3. Get SMEs
onboard
Set Measurable
Learning Objectives (LOs)
Learning objectives clearly describe
what learners will be able to do on
completion of a course.
Setting performance-based learning
objectives fulfills the adult learning
principle that states ‘adults need to
know why they should learn something’.
Setting learning objectives will also conserve time
and form the basis for deciding the following
aspects of the course:
 Scope of the content
 Choice of instructional strategy
 Evaluation methodology
 Duration and cost
Follow Bloom’s taxonomy when
framing learning objectives.
Check Availability of
Content
You need to check the available
classroom training content to assess
how much of it is relevant, if anything is
missing, and if all classroom activities
and questions have been captured.
Too much content or even too little of
relevant content is not desirable.
You can consider these three ‘F’s:
1. Filter content using learning objectives
2. Fire all content not aligned to learning objectives
3. Fill identified content gaps
Follow the principle of
‘form follows function’.
Get Your Subject Matter
Experts (SMEs) Onboard
SMEs are integral to the process of
eLearning development, but their time
is valuable, and training is not their
primary responsibility. However, we
need them to provide content for
eLearning, clarify doubts, and validate
courses.
Conserve SME time with these simple tips:
1. Educate them on the eLearning design and
development process (and their involvement).
2. Plan for curriculums, not standalone courses.
3. Leverage their resources – PPTs provided by
SMEs can be quickly recorded and converted into
microlearning modules.
Plan in advance – so they know when they’ll be
needed to review storyboards and courses.

eLearning Outsourcing Made Easy with Prep Work – Set Yourself Up for Success

  • 2. A little pre-work by you before outsourcing eLearning will put you on the right track and save a lot of time and efforts. 1. Set learning objectives 2. Check available content 3. Get SMEs onboard
  • 3. Set Measurable Learning Objectives (LOs) Learning objectives clearly describe what learners will be able to do on completion of a course. Setting performance-based learning objectives fulfills the adult learning principle that states ‘adults need to know why they should learn something’.
  • 4. Setting learning objectives will also conserve time and form the basis for deciding the following aspects of the course:  Scope of the content  Choice of instructional strategy  Evaluation methodology  Duration and cost Follow Bloom’s taxonomy when framing learning objectives.
  • 5. Check Availability of Content You need to check the available classroom training content to assess how much of it is relevant, if anything is missing, and if all classroom activities and questions have been captured. Too much content or even too little of relevant content is not desirable.
  • 6. You can consider these three ‘F’s: 1. Filter content using learning objectives 2. Fire all content not aligned to learning objectives 3. Fill identified content gaps Follow the principle of ‘form follows function’.
  • 7. Get Your Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) Onboard SMEs are integral to the process of eLearning development, but their time is valuable, and training is not their primary responsibility. However, we need them to provide content for eLearning, clarify doubts, and validate courses.
  • 8. Conserve SME time with these simple tips: 1. Educate them on the eLearning design and development process (and their involvement). 2. Plan for curriculums, not standalone courses. 3. Leverage their resources – PPTs provided by SMEs can be quickly recorded and converted into microlearning modules. Plan in advance – so they know when they’ll be needed to review storyboards and courses.
