5. I'm about to start a second round of raised veg plants. How should I
prepare/re-fertilize my soil?
Good Morning Clover ... had to run out to my raised bed that I'm
covering for the Autumn / Winter here in Hardiness zone 5b Ohio. I
mixed in some fresh organic material from my compost pile which is
basically broken down manure and leaves. You can buy bags of
'manure' at the garden centers to add to your growing space. In the
beds I'm not using but putting to rest for the winter season I spread
manure directly from the bunny trays which is bunny poop and some
wood chips. During the winter this combination breaks down and
makes for a great soil in the spring.

10. School Gardening
In The Kitchen
Community's modular
learning gardens such as
this one in Denver,
Colorado, kids learn
hands-on work, how to
use garden tools, and fun
plant facts from placards.
11. Organic Gardening
• biodiversity * crop rotation * compost * water conservation *
• The idea is that all life forms, from the bacteria on up, work together
with as little meddling from us as possible, so manufactured
fertilizers, pesticides, growth accelerants and regulators such as
hormones and antibiotics, genetic engineering, sewage sludge and
irradiation are off limits.
13. Community City Garden
Ron Finley has been called a
renegade gardener, a gangster
gardener and an eco-lutionary. His
TED talk about turning South
Central L.A,'s vacant lots into "food
forests" has been viewed almost one
million times since March. And he's
been profiled in everything from The
New York Times to treehugger.com.
14. Eating Seasonally
Locally grown seasonal produce is at its nutritional best, and is much
tastier.
There is a huge variety of fruits and vegetables that grow locally
throughout the year.

16. Potential problems:
• We didn’t know each other
before this class
• Graduate school involves
unique scheduling
difficulties for group work
17. How we made it WORK!
Initial meeting –
Narrow down topic according to something in
which we were ALL interested
THREE important means of communicating:
1) Blackboard Discussion Group - 40 posts ! !
2)Emails
3) In Class Group Time
18. +Communication
+Flexibility
+Support
Used ALL of our combined resources
and skills
Asked one another for information
Evaluated one another’s ideas
19. Although we each were able to see applications of
the 3 learning theories applied throughout the
events on HGTV,
the main learning experience was gained
through our participation in collaborative
learning.
The members of our team enjoyed learning
about gardening almost as much as we enjoyed
learning more about each other.
