ART ERAS Eras Prehistoric (100,000BC-1000BC) Greek (800BC-200AD) Roman (120BC-400AD) Medieval (300AD-1200AD) Renaissance (1400AD-1500AD) Eras (cont) Baroque (1600’s) Eighteenth Century (1700’s) Nineteenth Centiury (1800’s) Moden (20 th Century, 1900’s) Contemporary (Now)
Prehistoric Era (100,000BC-1000BC) The Prehistoric Era ran from 100,000BC to 1000 BC. This era could be called the era of “cave paintings”. There were many caves all over the Eastern countries. One cave that stands out as a nice Paleolithic one is the Lascaux Cave. It is located within France and it contains many pictures like the ones posted to the left. All paintings found inside this cave has been calculated to be over 17,000 years old. A bull in Lascaux. A horse
Prehistoric Era (100,000BC-1000BC) cont. Many of the paintings in this era are of animals. The Lascaux cave in particular have over 1,500 pictures of animals in it. The reason that most paintings contain animals is because most of the prehistoric inhabitants were hunters. Their lives depended on this type of living.
[object Object],[object Object],Greek Era (800BC-200AD) In the Greek Era, there were a couple different “sub-Eras, or periods, that occurred. Among these are the Dark Ages (1100BC – 750BC), the Archaic Period (750-480BC), the Classical Period (480-323BC), and finally the Hellenistic Period (323-31BC). The Greeks are given most credit for architecture because they have many city-states and political subdivisions beginning. Without the Greeks, who knows what our buildings would look like in our nation’s capital. They have one of the “seven wonders of the world”. It is the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The Greeks didn’t just have architecture. They also had great theaters, scultpers, and painters.
[object Object],Statue in Olympia Youth of Marathon The Parthenon As I said, a lot of Greeks were interested in sculpture, pottery, and architecture.
[object Object],ROMAN ERA (120BC-400AD) “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” --- Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor Cicero, a ruler
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],ROMAN ERA (120BC-400AD) cont.
The Medieval Era was basically consistent on paintings, but there was also architecture that the people did. Many cathedrals in our nation as well as others, are built in a medieval type of architecture. Medieval Era (300AD-1200AD)
[object Object]
Renaissance Era (1400AD-1500AD) This background picture shows a decent amount of paintings from the Renaissance Period. Of the most famous, the Mona Lisa (left) is the popular one. Along with the paintings, artists also did sculptures and so on.
As I said last slide, Renaissance had paintings and architecture. This time period was the “rebirth”. It seems to be the most active. Among the artists during this time were da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Baroque Era (1600's) The Baroque era is one that is widespread in the different types of arts. There were people writing literature, as well as being architects, dance, singing (opera), painting, sculpting, and acting. It seems as though it was one of the more active eras by means of what all was going on. Largest Baroque palace.
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY ERA (1700'S) During the eighteenth century era, people were starting to develop the painting scheme of portraits of people. This would be the stepping stones for how almost all United States President’s would be depicted. The only ones to possibly be painted like this in this era would be Washington and Adams. Another theme was just basic nationalism because it was the time frame where our country was being “born”.
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY ERA (1700'S) cont. The reason for this form of patriotic art is because the Revolutionary War had just taken place and the American people seemed to have great amounts of pride for their country. The pictures at the right show that painting portraits was not the only form of art being used. Literature was also being written along with music.
Nineteenth Century Era (1800's) It seems as though the nineteenth century theme as far as paintings were more of the nature type in America. There were still the other uses for the paintings as I discussed in the past few slides such as painting portraits of people especially the Presidents. One of the reasons that people started painting more natural scenes was because there was less turmoil than during the Revolutionary War.
Nineteenth Century Era (1800's) cont. Just because I say the main theme, in my opinion, of the nineteenth century art is nature, doesn’t mean that other things can not be painted. Some political occurrences would painted as well as miscellaneous items.
Modern Era (Twentieth Century, 1900's) Art took on a somewhat different approach between the 1800’s and 1900’s. It started to get into a guessing game. It basically took the form that different people got different meanings from the same painting. It was done this way to provoke thought and to appreciate the true meaning of art. Painting was not the only mean of the arts. Dancing, singing, sculpture, and the rest still continued but painting became the more known. It also started to pick up three-dimensional aspects.
Modern Era (Twentieth Century, 1900's) cont. Not all art was a guessing game. Some inspiring people such as Norman Rockwell distinguished themselves as prominent artists during this time frame. Most of these paintings carried some sort of a moral or value to be taught.
Contemporary Era (Now) There is no definite art theme at this time. The art is just produced by what the people are feeling. It is taking on the newer three-dimensional effect that the twentieth century left off with. It is taking it to new levels. Photography has also taken big steps as an art form. Even sculptures such as the one to the left Are showing up everywhere. A good example Would be the ones that are on campus. Once Again these are used to provoke thought.
The End

  • 17. Nineteenth Century Era (1800's) cont. Just because I say the main theme, in my opinion, of the nineteenth century art is nature, doesn’t mean that other things can not be painted. Some political occurrences would painted as well as miscellaneous items.
  • 19. Modern Era (Twentieth Century, 1900's) cont. Not all art was a guessing game. Some inspiring people such as Norman Rockwell distinguished themselves as prominent artists during this time frame. Most of these paintings carried some sort of a moral or value to be taught.
