HVDC AND FACTS
POWER TRANSMISSION
 HVDC
 High Voltage Direct Current
 A system used for transmitting or exchanging electrical power
by means of direct current.
 FACTS
 Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems
 Systems used for the dynamic control of voltage, impedance
 and phase angle of high voltage AC transmission lines
AC is
advantageous
and feasible
as:
Voltage
conversion-
simple
Allows high power
& high insulation
level within 1 unit
Simple device,
little
maitenance
Three phase synchronous
generator is superior to
dc generator
The benefits of direct current (DC) distribution grids include the
elimination of the need for synchronisation of the signal at electrical
connectors linking different grids together, reports Pike Research.
Using alternating current, waves which are not synchronised with one
another can destructively interfere as their positive and negative
components cancel each other out.
But with DC, there is no need to ensure synchronicity at the electrical
connectors between grids, as the waves have only positive
components.
This could make it easier for countries to link their grids; Pike Research
notes that the US is already making connections to Canada and
Mexico.

The converter transformers
transforms
the voltage of the AC busbar
to the
required entry voltage of the
converter.
• Prevention of intermittent current
• Limitation of the DC fault currents
• Prevention of resonance in the dc circuit
• Reducing harmonic currents including
limitation of telephone interference
ADVANTAGES
• HVDC links do not increase the Short Circuit Level of the
connected systems
• Faults and oscillations don’t transfer across HVDC
interconnected systems
Firewall against cascading outages
• HVDC can transport energy economically and efficiently over
longer distances than ac lines or cables
• Increased Transmission Capacity in a fixed corridor
• Up to 3 times more power per tower, therefore narrower rights of
way.
