“The concept of basically connecting any device
with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to
each other). This includes everything from
cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines,
headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost
anything else you can think of.”

7. IoT Use case – Rolls-Royce
About Rolls-Royce
The high-tech manufacturer that are used by
500 airlines and more than 150 armed forces.
Problem
• To monitor the health of their products to
spot potential problems before they occur.
Solution
• Using wireless transmissions (like VHF
radio and SATCOM) to send sensor data
from the aircraft which can help them get
insight of engine operation – “Total Care”
8. IoT Use case – Pendleton & Son Butchers
About Pendleton & Son
Superior quality butcher shops based in
north-west London, established in 1996,
Problem
• Supermarket chain store/small butcher shop
Solution
• Using inexpensive cellular phone detector
sensor to measure/monitor people that
walked past the shop.
• Using external data like weather data to
help predict demand.
9. What is Complex Event Processing (CEP)
Source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_event_processing
Complex event processing, or CEP, is event
processing that combines data from multiple
sources[2] to infer events or patterns that suggest
more complicated circumstances. The goal of
complex event processing is to identify
meaningful events (such as opportunities or
threats)[3] and respond to them as quickly as
possible.

11. What is Data fusion
Data fusion is the process of integration of multiple data and knowledge representing the
same real-world object into a consistent, accurate, and useful representation.

12. A simple Data fusion example
Prediction of water level: Suppose you have a model that predicts river water level every
hour (using the usual inputs). You know that your model is not perfect and you don’t trust it
100%. So you want to send someone to check the river level in person. However, the river level
can only be checked once a day around noon and not every hour. Furthermore, the person who
measures the river level cannot be trusted 100% either. So how do you combine both outputs
of river level (from model and from measurement) so that you get a ‘fused’ and better
estimate?
