June 20, 2016
Introduction
This presentation will help explain the importance of integrating technology into
sheltered instruction. It will also explore different classroom scenarios where the
featured tools and technologies could be used to support English language
learners. The presentation will help committee members learn how technology
can:
 Aide in demonstrating a concept, skill, or strategy
 Provide feedback for student development
 Help students build their vocabulary
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)
and Sheltered Instruction
 The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is a
scientifically validated model of sheltered instruction
designed to make grade-level academic content
understandable for English learners while at the same time
developing their English language (Echevarria, et al., 2013).
 Sheltered Instruction is a means for making content
comprehensible for English learners while they are developing
English proficiency (Echevarria, et al., 2013).
Technology
Technology is viewed as an activity that changes or forms culture.
Technology integration in the classroom can be used to promote
student involvement in their learning (Gonzalez, et al., 2006). When
technology tools ae effectively integrated into the curriculum, they
can help extend learning by:
• Accessing primary source materials that are up-to-date
• Creating ways for students and teachers to collaborate
• Using text, images, and sound to express understanding
• Customizing and individualizing curriculum
• Promoting cooperative group work
Technology Tools for Concept, Skills, and Strategies
Sight Words – a free website resource that includes flashcards and
games that allows teachers to add their own voice to games and
activities. It is designed to be shared by the teacher and student
working together.
Starfall – has free resources that is suitable for individualized
development of concept, reading, and learning skills and strategies. The
website is accompanied by audio and illustrations where students can
listen to audio lessons, read along to stories, or play challenging and
strategic games.
Classroom Technology Needed: Computers and Tablets
Classroom Scenario One
Classroom Scenario One
Scenario:
English language students in a kindergarten class are having difficulties
following along with their reading assignments and displaying concepts, skills,
and strategies that is used in their class by other students.
Solution:
Teachers can use the Starfall and Sight Words apps and websites on either a
computer or a tablet to allow students to listen to or read stories that are in
their native language. Students can even practice their concept skills and
strategies by playing games or taking practice quizzes that the website and app
offers.
Technology Tools That Helps Students Build Their
Vocabulary
Learn English Kids – allows students to match written words to
images to test key vocabulary and additional lessons that can
be purchased by teachers.
KinderSite – a website designed for kindergarten age children
and English language learners that features fun and interactive
games that comes in different languages. The website featured a
EuroLib that teachers can use to display vocabulary in different
languages that is used to motivate early language learners.
Classroom Technology Needed: Computers and Tablets
Classroom Scenario Two
Classroom Scenario Two
Scenario:
English language students in a kindergarten class are having problems
with their vocabulary words each week. Their main problem is that they
are only familiar with a few letters of the alphabet.
Solution:
Teachers can use the KinderSite and Learn English Kids app that allows
students to view their vocabulary words in different languages. The
students will learn how to spell and pronunciate their words in the
English language.
Technology Tools That Provides Feedback For Student
Development
Learn English Kids – a website that allows teachers to create quizzes based
off of games that are fun for students, but gives valuable information to
teachers to enable them to give adequate feedback.
Blackboard – a website where teachers can create quizzes for kindergarten
students and receive instant results and displays students’ weaknesses.
Classroom Technology Needed: Computers, Tablets, and Podcasts
Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) – a technology tool that
uses Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) software to record and later
evaluate students’ individual pronunciation and provide feedback and
modified instructional scaffolding.
Classroom Scenario Three
Classroom Scenario Three
Scenario:
English language students in a kindergarten class are instructed to take
reading and vocabulary quizzes. Once they complete their assignments, the
teacher will make corrections and provide necessary feedback to students.
Solution:
Teachers can use the Blackboard, Spelling City, or CAPT software to view their
students’ weaknesses, make corrections to their quizzes, and give ELLs
adequate feedback that can be used for the student’s academic achievements
and/or for parent and teacher conferences.
Conclusion
The previous scenarios featured in this presentation
showed the importance of using technology in sheltered
instruction. It allows English language learners to be able
to grasp concepts better and be able to make positive
connections. The technology featured included audio
devices visuals, multimedia usage, and software. All
seven technology tools recommended in the presentation
not only assists English language learners succeed, but
they can also be used to support the SIOP Model.
