Editor's Notes

  1. GM, GA, GE. Thank you very much for attending this event. It’s am honored to be here. in next 45 minutes or so, we will give you a quick overview of AWS and then quickly dive into some key enterprise adoption trends. I am going to share several stories with you on how enterprises are using the AWS Cloud today. When I talk to people, they feel cloud is just for startups. Today, I hope to change the perception that cloud is just as good for enterprises as well.
  2. The year 2011 was our best year ever. We broke our own record in a number of areas. We launched in several new geographiesGrowthand Expansion, New Services and Features, and # and Quality of our customers. This I believe is the best way to truly assess the cloud service provider. Every customer when trying to choose a cloud service provider should examine every cloud service provider in these areas.
  3. We launched 3 new regions this year and this makes a total of 7 regions around the globe and more regions coming very very soon. We are not only seeing new customers in different geographies using the cloud but also seeing that our existing customers would like to take their business to new geographies with us. They want to do expand their business in different geographies and leverage the cloud.
  4. We have customers in 190 countres. You will notice that I have some big brand names like shell, Capital IQ
  5. To give you an idea of growth and investment that we are doing and how much capacity we are adding to meet our demand. In the year 2000, Amazon.com was a 2.7B enterprise. Today, AWS is adding amount of storage and compute capacity that Amazon required in year 2000 every day. So conceptually, five days from now, it will be five times the capacity required to run 2.7B enterprise. If you think about it, its huge.
  6. We will let our Numbers speak as of Q3 2011, you can see we doubling every year. 100% YOY growth. These services are built and designed for scale. Peak requests are 370K per second.
  7. The benefits are real. The cloud can help your company save time and improve agility – it’s faster to get started: you can build new environments in minutes as you don’t need to wait for new servers to arrive. The elastic nature of the cloud makes it easy to scale up and down as needed. At the end of the day you have more resources left for innovation which allows you to focus on projects that matter to your business.
  8. We have really come a long way. Today, Amazon Web Services is not just one service but a suite of services that enterprises can leverage to deploy highly mission-critical applications with confidence.
  9. F
  10. AWS does not force developers to use any particular programming model, language, or operating system.AWS does not force developers to use the entire suite of services - they can use any of our infrastructure services individually or in any combination.AWS does not limit developers to a pre-set amount of storage, bandwidth, or computing resources they can consume - they can use as much or as little as they wish, and only pay for what they use.
  11. We understand that in order to run Enterprise applications you need enterprise grade software. Today, you can really choose a range of enterprise software to run on AWS. All this software is certified and supported by the vendors themselves and bring your own license (BYOL). This is one of the core differentiators of AWS that you can move packaged applications to the cloud or when moving to the newer versions of these applications, instead of upgrading the software on-premises, they move to the cloud and do a diagonal upgrade.
  12. You can extend your corporate datacenter to the cloud. Create a private slice of the public cloud and define your own network topology so that your corporate network can breathe in and breathe out. This year, we also released one dedicated
  13. To run highly mission-critical application in a secure cloud environment, Amazon VPC is perfect choice. It is network isolation layer that bridges your corporate data center to the cloud. You define the IP address range, You have complete control over your inbound and outbound access thru Network ACLs, You can define additional security by configuring your routetables and statefulsecurity groups. You can also configure openVPN or ipsec for encrypted tunnels. Best of all, you can spread your load using elastic load balancing and elastically scale and shrink your resources automatically – It’s a full house!
  14. This is a screen shot of Amazon VPC Web management console. You can create several different VPC configurations right from point and click interface of VPC. Let’s see how all this works.
  15. This is how most of the enterprises are leveraging VPC – What I call the new Enterprise IT network architecture – which will be powered by the cloud.
  16. Autodesk leverages Amazon VPC as extension of their corporate datacenter. VPC is part of their internal network. They had 3 datacenters since 2009, VPC is 4th datacenter. It was so successful within Autodesk that they identified several new business opportunities and products as a result of this integration.
  17. Almost all of you know NYTimes’s cloud success story of how an engineer went to senior management to ask for resources to covert 1851-1922 newspaper articles from Tiff to PDF. The magagement approved for 3 resources that he will get in a period of 5 months and he then run it for a 1 year to convert all that 4TB of data. He leverage the cloud and spin up 100 EC2 instances and in a matter of 24 hours was able to convert to 1.5 TB data. This service is now paid service at Nytimes and can be accessed at timesmachine.nytimes.com. It was a great proof of concept to evaluate the cloud.
  18. NYTimes quickly realized the value got the early mover advantage and have been growing since. This is a graph I stole from one of their presentations and you can see how EC2 is being used as extension of their existing datanceter footprint. EC2 footprint has grown from 5% to 40% in 2011. They now have 4 data centers and VPC and EC2 is the integral part of the infrastructure strategy.
  19. The best part to know is even though the EC2/VPC is 40% of the entire datacenter footprint, it only accounts to 26% of the total operational costs across DCs. So they are not only able to get massive scalability and but at reduce cost. Isn’t this awesome
  20. Security and Operational Excellence is the Top most priority. Its Priority 0. No exceptions allowed. We understand that Security and governance are often the top issues identified when we talk to our customers. Instead of tossing this over the fence, we really advice and highly recommend our customers to invest in security review early in the process. Get your security folks talk to our security folks and understand security and compliance. Security is really not on or off. It’s a spectrum of options that you can choose from that is right for your application.
  21. Remember TVs without remote control. We had to walk up to the television set to change the channel or the volume. Now we have remote controls, we sit on our couch and control the hardware. Cloud APIs are remote control of the cloud hardware. You don’t have the need to walk up to server hardware.
  22. Security is not optional. We have to built it every single layer right from perimeter to the application. In the cloud, security is a shared responsibility. Infrastructure security is responsibility of the AWS. This year amazon worked really hard and now have achieved all the security certifications. Best of all you get all these security certifications for free. Even if you don’t have credit card workloads, you still get the same secure infrastructure. For Infrastructure security, you can get full SAS 70 audit report on requestFor Services Security, we provide detailed technical documentation on how to use the featuresFor Application Security, we have security bulletins (security center), provide you with security guidance, Premium Support
  23. Untiloctober 2011, Amazon had client side encryption. You can manage the keys and encrypted you data and then store it on Amazon. Now Amazon release serversideenvryption at no additional cost to the customer. It does AES256 encrypts the data, rotates your keys and its just a simple argument or checkbox.
  24. Mix and Match to get the best bang for buck and further savings.Several of our customers have certain type of regulatory workloads that restrict them to run applications on the same physical host as other customers. Noisy Nieghbor Syndrome. We solved that by introducing Dedicated Instances. Dedicated Instances are available only within VPC where only one customer can spin up instances on one physical host.
  25. We understand that you might have 100s of questions around risk and compliance.
  26. Helping to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our customers’ systems and data is of the utmost importance to AWS, as is maintaining customer trust and confidence. Control Environment, Control Objectives, Environmental safeguards, Business continuity. Also provide security best practices.
  27. We build services not just for our customers but ourselves. We use them because we believe in them. One project I am really proud of is How Amazon moved its corporate intranet that stores highly sensitive data. In this project, we made sure Amazon is transparent…….At the end of the project, we not only …..
  28. The beauty about this deployment project was that it used variety of 3p packaged software on VPC.
  29. Data is new raw material in par with capital and labor. Today, data is core asset of any successful enterprise and its ability model, analyze, distill knowledge from that data, derive valuable business insight is core differenciator.
  30. Big data is what clouds are for. Storing Collecting Analyizing, Visualizing, ……
  31. Bankinter uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) as an integral part of their credit-risk simulation application, developing complex algorithms to simulate diverse scenarios in order to evaluate the financial health of their clients. Bank at least 400,000 simulations to get realistic results.Through the use of AWS, Bankinter brought average time-to-solution down from 23 hours to 20 minutes and dramatically reduced processing, with the ability to reduce even further when required.
  32. A large online retailer went to Razorfish– one of the large system integrators - to analyze massive amounts of click stream logs from their website. They analyze massive datasets of clickstream logs and provide patterns to the their ad serving and cross-selling engines so that they can show a targeted ad. 36. Myth: If I Can’t Move Everything at Once, the Cloud Isn’t for Me Its not all or nothing. We really don’t expect our customers to put all the applications that they have today running on-prem move it overnight, its not possible and not recommended. We recommend picking a few apps, gaining experience and comfort and come up with a migration plan
  37. There are severalapproaches to building a cloud strategy. We’ve seen customers from all size companies, from all industries get started with AWS in different waysBuilding a cloud strategy really depends on the companies needs. As a CIO or a manager reporting to the CIO, we recommend that you have a 2 part strategy for your Enterprise to get started in the cloud. For new applications, build and design new architectures with the cloud in mind. We have seen several customers like New York times who were quickly able to leverage some of cloud architecture patterns of implementing elasticity from ground up, loosely coupling etc. in other words, build a cloud-ready design from scratch.Just like greenfield applications can benefit from the cloud, existing application can too benefit from the cloud. For existing applications, we recommend building a migration plan, and transitioning application by application. This enables organizations to gain experience with the cloud as they begin to transition larger chunks of their infrastructure. When building this plan, you will notice that there are number of apps that are simply no-brainer to move to the cloud and can be moved very easily today. And other apps, they take methodical phased plan approach. This strategy has worked for several of our customers. Whether you are startup or an SMB or Large enterprise or an SI helping the customer, the strategy does not really need to change. We have noticed that when customers have followed the step by step phased planned approach - (some of which I will discuss in this presentation) and have invested time and resources towards building proof of concept projects, they clearly see the tremendous potential of AWS, and are able to leverage its strengths very quickly. And want to move other apps as well.

  40. The first step in the migration of existing applications comes to classifying your IT assets. Some customers have looked at their IT departments from 50K view and have created dependency tree of their logical constructs. Listing all your IT assets and identifying the upward and downward dependencies. Within every organization there are variety of applications of different sizes and shapes and with different set of characteristics. Thinking that if one application cannot move, does not mean all applications cannot move. Breaking down the big job, into small tasks and tackling each task individually will get the big job done. So he classified the IT Asset portfolio into different categories – Top secret, secret, public datasets, Application with high low medium compliance requirements, Applications different security and licensing requirements.
  41. Stack ranking your assets and prioritizing the applications based on simple criteria you defined earlier. Andy noticed very quickly that there were several applications which are “No Brainer to Move” and can be moved today and will result in immediate benefits of the cloud. At the same time, He also did not just select some applications that were just easy to move but also that were complex and can be used as a internal success story within the companyYou will notice that some applications are just plain drop dead cool if they moved to the cloud like your content, tutorial websites, pre-sales demo environments.
  42. After listing them, he started to stack rank this IT assets based on the analysis. The applications that would take time to move to the cloud are NOT off the list they are just lower down the list. And the applications that are low hanging fruits are up the list. Pick the low hanging fruits first, gain some experience and then tackle the other applications. For example web applications or content management systems etc are all easy to move and can be forklifted to the cloud.
  43. Schneider Electric is an international energy management specialist operating in more than 100 countries. The company has over 110,000 employees For its Intranet-based applications, Schneider Electric is using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) in combination with the Riverbed Cloud Steelhead service. Riverbed Cloud Steelhead accelerates data traffic between the company’s existing wide-area network and its Amazon VPC.  Since the migrated applications are Java and .NET-based legacy systems, the Schneider Electric IT team established the applications within the Amazon VPC using the necessary Windows and Linux operating systems.
  44. Shell started provisioning AWS services in April 2010 The Shell Foundation Platform – an IT framework – is AWS approvedThat means that the Center of Excellence has a pre-approved framework that allows LOBs to deploy cloud-approved applications onto AWSThe Shell Foundation Platform is a framework used by all new projects utilizing on-demand cloud services. The SFP is certified to run on AWS. Compliant applications built on the SFP are able to be run in production on AWS.
  45. The Blueprint offers a step by step approach to cloud migration and has been proven successful. When customers will follow this blueprint and focus on creating a proof of concept, they will immediately see value in their proof of concept projects and see tremendous potential in the AWS cloud. After they move their first application to the cloud, they will get new ideas and will want to move them into the cloud.
