The Age of Blue and White
In the West, the phrase ‘blue and white’ has become synonymous with Chinese porcelain. During the eighteenth
century, by which time all things Chinese enjoyed an irresistible vogue in Europe, and when aristocrats vied with
each other at auctions of Chinese porcelain, sometimes even bankrupting themselves in their quest to acquire
it, blue and white arguably represented the pinnacle of porcelain taste, porcelain in its most coveted form. Euro-
pean display cabinets crowded with it were displayed proudly in domestic interiors; occasionally, it was even set
ostentatiously into the walls of rooms to provide a sort of porcelain ‘wallpaper’.
It was not always so. In China, the land of its origin, blue and white seems to have had tentative beginnings during
the Tang Dynasty (618-907), but then it vanished from sight until its resurgence during the period represented in
the current lot, the Yuan (1279-1368). This ‘peony’ jar is a statement piece. It is a classic Yuan vessel type, and
like its fourteenth-century comparators, it shares certain characteristics of design and production. The energy
of its vigorous painting style, its bright colour, imposing size, and general flamboyance, were all aspects that the
Mongols favoured in their porcelain.
The jar’s principal decorative pattern comprises peony and lotus scroll bands, while around its neck, where more
usually a wave band might be expected, instead there twines a thin floral scroll. This particular decorative com-
bination, though not unique, is nevertheless less commonly found; compare Sotheby’s London, 11 May 2011, lot
51, and Christies Hong Kong, 31 May 2010, lot 1985.

A FAMILLE ROSE DECALOBED LIME-GREEN
GROUND TEA-TRAY, JIAQING MARK (1796-

with rounded sides and raised on four bracket feet, dec-

florets reserved on a lime-green ground that surrounds
an imperial poem in praise of fine tea in iron red reserved

reign (1797), the reverse with a six-character reign mark
of Jiaqing reserved in a white square on a lime-green
ground, 16cm wide
€ 10,000 - 20,000
‘Finest tea of the first picking, and a bright full moon, prompt a line
of verse’
Stephen Bushell’s translation of an extract from the poetic inscription
borne by the two trays offered in lots 32 and 33 helps to bring alive for
those who do not know the Chinese language the eminence of tea in
early Chinese society. Irish society, of course, would quickly acknowl-
edge how wedded it is, and has been for many years, to all things
associated with the ritual ‘cuppa’ and its restorative effects; Chinese
society, by contrast, would perhaps be even quicker in its acknowl-
edgment, because from far earlier times than it first became popular
in Europe, tea drinking and its associated benefits were praised in the
East in a variety of contexts: ‘one cup is enough to lighten the heart,
and dissipate the early winter chill’, as the poetic inscription on these
trays goes on to say. In the present sale, Chinese ‘tea culture’ is rep-
resented here at its highest social level. Cyclically dated by inscription
to 1797, the first year of his reign, the trays also bear the seal marks of
the Jiaqing Emperor (reigning 1796 to 1820). His father, the Qianlong
Emperor, still alive though now as emperor emeritus, had abdicated
in the previous year in favour of his son.
Trays of this type proved popular, and several examples are known,
either in quadrilobe, decalobe (as here), or, more rarely, rectangu-
lar form with rounded corners. A tray identical to the one with the
lime-green ground (lot 32) was auctioned by Christies, New York, 16
September 2016, lot 1375; and the sister to the second of our two
lots, that with a lemon-yellow ground (lot 33), and which came from
the same original collection (see the note on provenance below), was
auctioned by Sotheby’s, London, 16 May 2012, lot 291.
Provenance: by repute, formerly in the possession of Barnaby Fitz-
patrick, second Baron Castletown, and purchased at an auction of
chattels from his house, Granston Manor, Co. Laois, conducted by
Battersby’s, Dublin, 5 May 1938.

The Petals of Longevity
The Chinese were fascinated by the chrysanthemum flower and had drawn inspiration from its ability to resist the chills
of winter. They referred to it as the flower of longevity. Emperors drank chrysanthemum-steeped wines, emulating a
tradition that the Immortals did likewise. If the inhabitants of some village or other showed a tendency to long life, the
word went around that it must be because their water source was bordered with chrysanthemums. On the ninth day of
the ninth month of the year, the beginning of autumn, Chinese literati wrote poems in praise of the chrysanthemum, see-
ing its resilience as a symbol of the resilience to which they themselves must aspire. Hence the chrysanthemum flower
figured forth a network of values, and unsurprisingly, came to feature prominently in Chinese art.
The Yongzheng Emperor (reigning from 1723 to 1735) shared the general esteem for this flower. Records reveal that
in 1733, he ordered his superintendent of the imperial kilns in Jingdezhen to create twelve dishes of chrysanthemum
shape each in a different colour. Forty dishes of each colour type were to be made. Today, the Palace Museum in Beijing
uniquely possesses a full set, the Beijing ‘Twelve’, as they are sometimes referred to.
The dish offered here as lot 74 came from the Carlow Collection, a collection assembled in Philadelphia during the 1940s
by two sisters who later returned with it to Ireland. Items from this collection first started appearing on the open market
in 2010. The collection was diverse, but all of it had merit, and amongst it were several imperial porcelains which were
subsequently re-auctioned; for example, Bonhams, London, 11 November 2010, lot 312; Sotheby’s, London, 15 May
2013, lot 226.
Dishes in the camellia-leaf green colour have rarely come up for sale; a very similar dish in Geneva, the Baur Collection
(accession number A496), its petal tips a little less pointed, is published by John Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Baur
Collection, 2 vols (Geneva, 1999), II, 223. It might be noted that the dimensions of the Beijing ‘Twelve’ and the present lot
are identical: general diameter, 17.8 cm; footring diameter, 11.3 cm; and height, 3.8 cm.

Spirits of Origin and Prophecy
As far back at least as the Shang Dynasty (and hence even before 1050 BC), owls are known to have
loomed large in the Chinese consciousness; owls throng among the beliefs and mythology of these early
peoples. The Shang believed that they originated from a mythological ‘black bird’, identified by some as
being an owl. Whatever the truth of that identification, it is at least clear that during the Shang Dynasty,
owls were regarded as auspicious, as protectors and stimulators of fertile crops. When this dynasty was in
time succeeded by that of the Zhou, Zhou workmen borrowed from the Shang their repertoire of decora-
tive designs. In consequence, owls lived on in art and retained something of their ancient mythic power.
They also lived on in literature, and although in some literary contexts they started to assume a less benign
appearance, still the ancient totemic force of the owl existed as an undertow and made its presence felt. A
poet of the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD), Jia Yi, finding himself exiled to the remote southern Chinese
province of Changsha, viewed an owl which had visited him one day as a prophetic embodiment of his
own personal Daoist beliefs; incarnated in his owl visitor was a spirit speaking eloquently of life, death, and
the Mandate of Heaven.
Owl storage jars of the type offered here are very rare; the present instance, partially covered in a pale
olive-green lead-based glaze over stoneware, dates from the period of the Warring States.

Imperial Luxuries
Luxury has ever been the condition of those who rule,
whether their taste be driven by their personal inclination
or by the political imperative to display magnificence. The
Qianlong Emperor (reigning from 1736 to 1795) knew luxury
from both of these perspectives. Towards the latter part of
his reign, he immersed himself increasingly in things that
delighted the senses; some would argue that he did so to
the detriment of governing vigilantly, leaving a door open
for unscrupulous mismanagers to enter and operate behind
his back. Whatever the truth of that, at court the imperi-
al field of vision was abundantly crowded with sights of
opulence and refinement. Indeed, imperial workshops had
been set up in Beijing to produce exquisite art objects, toys
‘to keep a drowsy emperor awake’, as the poet W. B. Yeats
might have put it.
Amongst the assorted opulent playthings that formerly
thronged the palace, it is easy to imagine this large fish
basin taking its place. Basins of similar size, with a similar
decoration of deer on the exterior and fish on the interi-
or, are known, and have been attributed to the imperial
workshops, probably in the latter part of the reign. They
represent a high point of eighteenth-century Chinese
cloisonné work. Decoration on Chinese art seldom exists
for its own sake; images come freighted with meaning, and
the meanings released by the imagery on this basin are no
exception, for they heap one auspicious wish upon another.
On the interior, vivid fish and other water creatures navigate
through aquatic plants. In Chinese, the word for a fish (yu)
sounds somewhat like the word for abundance. Hence a
number of fishes represent abundance multiplied, while
goldfish (jinyu) imply abundant gold. Two of the fish on the
basin appear to be carp (li), a word which in turn sounds a
little like the word for profit; by logical extension, two carp
represent profit doubled. The basin’s exterior functions
similarly, for it is replete with motifs of longevity which have
been combined into a landscape: we find deer, cranes and
pine trees, all expressive of long life. The basin’s ensemble,
a tour de force of cloisonné work, would have collaborated
with so many other imperial artefacts in conspiring to enfold
the ageing emperor in a vision of harmony, prosperity, and
long life.
A number of comparable basins have been sold including,
for example, that from the Mandel Collection offered by
Christie’s, Hong Kong, 30 May 2012, lot 3910, and another
by Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, 30 May 2018, lot 3039; unlike
those basins, the present one additionally bears the reign
mark of the emperor done in cloisonné.

‘Dragons floating through swaying Lotus’
This epigraph, taken from Regina Krahl’s description of a blue and white dragon and lotus dish first sold in these rooms
some years ago and dated to the reign of the Xuande Emperor (1426-1435), serves equally well to describe the present
vessel around whose sides and rim dragons endlessly circle in their vigorous parade through fields profuse with blossoming
lotus. Indeed, the dragon and lotus motif was one of the three most characteristic ceramic designs employed on blue and
white porcelains during Zhengde’s reign (1506-1521).
A number of such vessels are known, and they exhibit some variation in the tone of their cobalt blue, which may range from
a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue; for an example of the former, compare the zhadou from the Meiyintang Collection
auctioned by Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, 7 April 2011, lot 60, and of the latter, compare that auctioned by Christies, Hong Kong,
7 October 2014, lot 3329. Tonal variation is perhaps a less surprising feature of these vessels when it is borne in mind that
during the Zhengde reign, cobalt pigment was being variously sourced; a reference in an annal of 1515 notes that at that
time, local cobalt was being used, but by the latter part of the reign, imported cobalt had been introduced once more. The
colour tone of the present lot compares more closely to that of the Meiyintang example cited above; even more striking,
however, is the near identical match provided by a zhadou offered by Nagel, Stuttgart, in their Asian Art sale of 8 December
2014. In terms of its height, proportion, and the execution of its reign mark, as well as in its use of a cobalt pigment produc-
ing a lighter, sky blue colour tone in the firing, the Nagel vessel offers the closest possible point of comparison to the one
under review here.

Seas of Celadon Green
Alongside blue and white, which has become a byword today for ceramics originating in China, the colour celadon, in its
many and varied shades and hues, could claim an equal stature; through the ages of Chinese ceramic manufacture, celadon
welled continually like a ceramic green tidal wave of multiple complexions. Indeed, unlike blue and white, which had not
always been as popular in China as it was to become after its ascendancy during the Yuan (1239-1368), celadon glazes, by
contrast, were never out of fashion, and are represented here and in a number of other lots in this auction; compare, for in-
stance, lots 61 and 62, items produced earlier than the present lot and in different places. Apart from these so-called Longq-
uan celadons, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen were also charged with the production of
celadon wares, of which the present lot is an outstanding example. Celadon production had begun modestly at Jingdezhen
during the Ming (1368-1644), but it was during the Qing that the taste for celadon became most conspicuous.
The Yongzheng Emperor (reigning 1723 to 1735) whose seal mark adorns this vase was a diligent porcelain connoisseur,
just as his father the Kangxi Emperor (reigning 1662 to 1722) had been before him, and as his son after him, the Qianlong
Emperor (reigning 1736 to 1795), would be in turn. Yongzheng actively legislated for the quality of the porcelain coming out
of Jingdezhen’s official imperial kilns. This was a matter on which he held firm views. Kiln superintendents were appointed to
oversee the quality of ceramics produced for use at court, ceramics that during this period would achieve new heights of in-
novation and finesse. Past traditions were respected - in fact, the shape of the present lot ultimately and deferentially echoes
archaic precedents - though at the same time, these precedents were never slavishly followed; rather, the old and the new
coexisted in a fusion that combined respect for past tradition with a forward-looking spirit of innovation and renewal. Ceram-
ics were created which aspired to embody the best of both worlds, of the world that had been and of the one that currently
was.

CHEN YANNING (CHINESE B.1945)
Young boy with fruit
Oil on board, 51 x 73cm
Signed
€ 20,000 - 30,000
Chen Yanning (b.1945) is a Chinese painter who lives and works in the United States. He was born in
the southern province of Guangzhou, where he studied at their Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in
1965. He continued to work at the Academy as a painter until 1986 when he relocated to America, to
study at Oklahoma City University. His early Chinese works include the poster Chairman Mao Inspects
the Guangdong Countryside (1972) and New Doctor of the Fishing Port (1973).
His has had many public portrait commissions most notably for the British Royal Family, in which he
painted Queen Elizabeth, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne. Yanning’s portrait of the Queen was
subsequently used by Royal Mail for the Jubilee Year stamp.
This present work is an example of the artist’s early paintings and was acquired by the present owner
directly from the artist. It depicts a young man set against the background of a blossoming tree. The
compositional arrangement it quite unusual and highly idiosyncratic. Yanning places the figure at the
bottom of the canvas, on the threshold of the picture plane. Only his head is visible, his arms and
body cut off from view. It is almost as if he has briefly popped his head up into the picture space, all of
sudden occupying the otherwise empty vista of a flowering prunus tree. Yanning has used the device
to create a sense of movement in the work, an immediacy between the viewer and the otherwise static
painted surface.
Yanning is working in oil paint, a medium predominantly used by western artists. Chinese painting was
traditionally based around the technique of ‘brush painting’, which consisted of similar techniques to
calligraphy using black ink or coloured pigments. Although a very different medium to oil paint, Yan-
ning’s portraits, in employing an impasto technique, which imbues the surfaced with an almost blurred
‘wash’ finish, seems to suggest the sustained influence of his country’s native painting.

Private Devotions in Public Spaces
The Qianlong Emperor (reigning from 1736 to 1795) had a deep personal adherence to Tibetan Buddhism, his de-
votion being evinced both in grand public gestures in its support and in his private studies. Not only did he learn the
Tibetan language, he also translated certain Buddhist scriptures. While it could be said that, in his capacity as a wily
political hat-wearer, Qianlong was fully aware that his stance would endear him among prominent ethnic groups in
China like the Mongols, among whom Tibetan Buddhism was revered, and that it would garner political advantages,
there can be little doubt that his adherence was also something more deeply felt, not merely a lip service calculated
to curry favour.
Unsurprisingly, therefore, this personal spiritual commitment was dimensioned in the arts of Qianlong’s glittering
court, and here, porcelain would come into its own, as it had done for many an emperor in days gone by who would
seek not only to see himself surrounded by objects of intrinsic aesthetic beauty, but ones which also released
meaning and resonated with the values and aspirations that he held dear.
The present blue and white dish is a case in point, for in its choice of decorative motifs, it celebrates some of
Buddhism’s most familiar images, notably the Eight Buddhistic Emblems painted around its cavetto in tones of rich
cobalt blue on a fine white ceramic body. (Its visual impact in this respect compares closely with that of lot 31 in the
present sale, another Qianlong-marked piece, a blue and white ‘squirrels and grapevine’ bowl.)
A number of dishes with this particular design scheme are known, especially in the polychrome palette of doucai
enamels, but are much rarer in blue and white; compare with the present lot Christies, Hong Kong, 30 May 2012, lot
4176.

A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE PENSIVE BODHISATTVA,
Maitreya, modelled in seated position with one leg folded over his left knee, with his
right hand raised to a side cheek, 12cm high
€ 1,200 - 1,800
Known as ‘National Treasure 83’ and housed in the National Museum of Korea, a gilt
bronze sculpture of the Bodhisattva seated with his right leg crossed over his left and
his right hand lifted to his face, fingers lightly touching his cheek. The sculpture dates
from the late 6th - early 7th century and this present example is a miniature version of
the country’s most treasured possession. The pose and gesture of the figure is rep-
resentative of a pan-Asian iconography that has come to be defined as the ‘pensive’
pose. It gained popularity in Korea in the sixth and seventh centuries, particularly due
to the growing influence of Chinese Buddhist archetypes.
Religious iconography and imagery are quite common in the Buddhist tradition. As
a polytheistic faith, representations abound for the many gods and goddesses. The
Bodhisattva figure is commonly depicted, as unlike the Buddha he has not reached
full enlightenment beyond mortal concerns. Instead they remain accessible within
the phenomenal world to help guide their followers. The creation of small-scale re-
productions of the larger bronze in the Korean National museum, exemplifies this
function of the Bodhisattva as the interceptor on the behalf of the faithful. In Korea
and Japan, Bodhisattva, are identified as Maitreya, the figure who will become the
teaching Buddha in the next era. The importance and divine wisdom of the figure
is perfectly captured, even in this miniature rendering, in the immense stillness of
the pose. However, the constant engagement with the world is embodied in the
slight movement suggested by the fingers touching the cheek, the relationship to the
natural world is not severed as it is through this lived experience, for the Buddhist
