Advantages and Disadvantages of Donation and Transfusion
Blood Transfusion Basics

Blood transfusion is the process of transferring blood or
blood components from one person to another
Transfusions are used to treat massive blood loss due to
 trauma or surgery
Also used to treat people suffering from blood disease

(Octboer 30, 2008). Blood: the global need for donation. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/10/30/f-blood-donation.html.
History of Blood Transfusion

Blood transfusion began in the mid 1600s
Was banned in europe because few people survived
  Doctors were using animal blood
In the 1900s, doctors discovered that people needed blood of
the same type for transfusions to be safe
Doctors also discovered how to preserve blood
(Octboer 30, 2008). Blood: the global need for donation. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/10/30/f-blood-donation.html.
Parts of the Blood

Today, blood transfusions can involve specific parts of the
    blood instead of whole blood
    Red blood cells
    White blood cells
    Platelets
    Plasma
(Octboer 30, 2008). Blood: the global need for donation. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/10/30/f-blood-donation.html.
Risks

While we have become more advanced, there are still risks to
blood transfusion, these risks include:
Fever
Allergic reaction
Hemolytic reaction
Disease
(Octboer 30, 2008). Blood: the global need for donation. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/10/30/f-blood-donation.html.
Supply and Screening

Blood supplies are often low, and drop usually in the
 summer
This is due to strict screening methods and a lack of donors
All donated blood in Canada is tested for HIV, Hepatitis, and
 other diseases
Canada has very specific screening requirements
(Octboer 30, 2008). Blood: the global need for donation. Retrieved from http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/10/30/f-blood-donation.html.
The Donation Process

Before Donation
During Donation
After Donation

(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
Before Donation

Checking of your pulse, blood pressure, temperature and
hemoglobin;
Questions about risk behaviours related to diseases
Signature of your application to confirm that you have read
and understood the information.
(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
During Donation

The blood donation itself only lasts about 10 minutes
The needle, like all of the materials used for collecting blood,
is new, sterilized, sealed and used only once.

(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
After Donation

Apply pressure for about five minutes to stop any bleeding.
Keep the bandage that covers the puncture on for six hours.
Avoid any intense physical activity for six to eight hours.
Depending on your job or the sport you practice, you may
need to wait a while before being active.
(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
Labile Blood Products

Labile blood products are perishable
Open 24/7, blood services are always ready to distribute
blood products
It takes at least one day to deliver fresh products
Each day, Quebec handles 200 blood orders from different
hospitals
(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
Stable Blood Products

Stable blood products last much longer than Labile ones. This
explains its name. Stable products are extracted from blood
plasma.
Stable products are purchased from suppliers
Some of the plasma produced from whole blood donations is
sent to a facility that extracts stable products from it.
(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
Treatments

Hemophilia
Leukemia
Surgery
Trauma/Accidents
Burns
(2010). Blood Donation. Retrieved from http://www.hema-quebec.qc.ca/donner/don-de-sang/index.en.html.
Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages and disadvantages of blood donation and
transfusions
Advantages

People who donate blood do so out of a sense of goodness,
to help friends, and because of social duty. Doing so satisfies
these people.
Lets face it, blood transfusions and are necessary. Every day
hundreds of orders for blood are made by hospitals.
Blood donations are completely safe. The needles used are
sterile and new, and are used only once.

Disadvantages

Blood transfusions cannot be 100% safe, even with the strict screening rules.
There are risks involved with all transfusions.

Some people have a fear of needles, and this prevents them from donating
      blood.

Blood donation can only be done 6 times a year per person, and this limits
the amount of blood given per year.
Sojka, Nilsson. (January 2008). The blood donation experience: self-reported motives and obstacles for donating
