The Choice Based Curriculum suggested by UGC in India for implementation at the UG level in all colleges and Universities in India.The feedback is sought in response to which Association of Mangalore University College Teachers conducted a workshop on April 18, 2015

2. Choice Based System
• All the subjects are to have uniform marks
• Each Subject should have a uniform number of
topics
• Syllabi would be non-step-ladder
(Independent chapters)
• Each topic will be dealt with twice or thrice
(repetition)
• A student need be present only for a
predetermined number of topics

3. Students Choice
• Student can select the subjects among various
disciplines
• One subject may be commerce, another one
science and a third one Humanities
• In a particular teaching hour, the classes may
be held for all the three subjects and he
chooses which class to attend
• The subjects he missed, he attends the next
time it is covered

10. Benefits
• Students have a choice between Hons., Course
and Basic Course-Honours having a more inter-
disciplinary approach
• Opportunity for Skill Development
• Standardised number of subjects and CGPA
• Up-to-date Curriculum
• Students will get an opportunity to use their
discretion at various stages
• It may make the students independent rather
than doting on the lecturer as in primary school

11. Problem Area 1: Curriculum Content
• In order to accommodate Electives, syllabus content
is made heavy and many core papers that are
studied now are omitted
e.g B.Com.Hons
(a) Cost Accounting has the four semester syllabus
prescribed for one semester
(b) Financial Accounting is studied in all the six
semesters now enabling students to get jobs to
work in Accounting Verticles in Karnataka. It is being
reduced to 2 Semester Core Papers
(c) Important employment areas like Banking and
Insurance are totally omitted

12. Problem Area 2: Time Table and Class Matrix
• Allowing core papers of one stream as Generic
Elective for other streams of study will create many
combinations of subjects at the institutional level
• There will be clash of classes: On Monday I hour, he
may have to attend core paper class and a Generic
Paper. This is a problem for Choice Based System
universally which can be tackled by changing the
approach to curriculum

13. Problem Area 3: Choice between Hons. And Basic
• Students will be indecisive between Hons. And
Basic Courses. A small difference in approach
regarding Generic Elective may not make a
substantial difference in perception
• There should be a more significant difference
between the two different courses

14. Suggestions
• The Hons. Course can be for a four year duration
whereas Basic would be for a three year course
• If accepted, Hons. Course would be designed as a
terminal course and Basic Degree as the continuing
course
• We can accommodate more core papers in Hons.
Course
• On the completion of each year of Hons. Course, a
Diploma can be awarded as Diploma in Business
Studies for Commerce after I Year and Advanced
Diploma in Business Studies after second year and
Professional Diploma in Business Studies after third
year. This will be helpful to the students terminating
their studies on account of employment or setting up
business unit

15. Suggestions…contd
• The syllabus should be 20 topics with each topic
repeated for teaching at least three times so that a
students who missed a subject due to clash of class
can attend the next time the topic is dealt with
• It should be enough that a student attends 15
topics in each Paper due to clash of classes and
holidays
• The topics should not have a step-ladder
arrangement. They should be independent topics
• Efforts should be made to create books like
“Readings in Micro-Economics” with independent
topics

16. Third Slide on Suggestions
• There should be allowable deviation of 20% in
the curriculum regarding core papers at the
University level
• Employment generating subjects should be
given a more weightage in the curriculum
